New species: Cartwheeling spiders, electric slugs

From a mossy forest in the Philippines to the sand slopes of Morocco, this past year has seen some staggering biological discoveries. Among the 18,000 new species named during the past year, an international committee of taxonomists selected their top 10 favorites for SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry's annual list. Previous years have recognized such luminaries as the Pancake Batfish and the Dragon Tree. This year's top 10 was no less surreal. Click through to see pictures.

Ireland is due to hold the world's first popular vote to decide whether gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to marry. The most recent opinion poll in The Irish Times indicated that 58% will vote in favor with 25% against, 17% were undecided or would not vote. Leaving aside the latter, this would suggest that 70% will vote Yes.
