Nine of the Custer County Chief coverage area volleyball teams concluded their regular season schedule last night. Two team still have games this weekend before subdistricts begin Monday. Arcadia plays at St. Edward Thursday night and Broken Bow will travel to Centura for a match Friday night.

KEARNEY -- The Kearney Country Club was site of the 2010 State Cross Country Championships. Broken Bow's Cody Dierking earned a Top 10 finish placing ninth in 17:05.9. Gordon-Rushville's Cole Wellnitz was the Class C State Champion in 16:38.5. Also participating for Broken Bow was Patrick Wright who finished 82nd in 19:22.6.
Ogallala was the Class C team champion followed by Southwest Conference relative, Gothenburg who finished seventh.
In Class D, Sargent's David Vincent placed 33rd in 18:18.4. The Class D State Champion was Ainsworth's Michael Schumacher in 16:33.9.
Doris Fay Stauffer Loeffelholz Reed was born Feb. 4, 1951, in Kearney. She was the youngest child of Aaron and Dollie (Scott) Stauffer.
She died Oct. 10, 2010, in Denver, Colo., at the Trauma Center after an elevator wheelchair lift accident in North Platte. She had just moved from Off Broadway in Broken Bow to an assisted living center just 11 days ago.
Doris had two brothers, Gerald and LeRoy; and two sisters, Carol and Patricia.
Lillie Jewel (Pirnie) Babcock, age 85, of Grand Island, formerly of the Broken Bow, Dunning, Nebraska area, died Oct. 17, 2010, in the Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Lillie J. was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Groesbeck, Texas, to Daniel C. and Melvinie (Winn) Chavers.
Lillie was married to Gifford Pirnie who died in 1993, and later Robert Babcock.
Lillie is survived by three sons, Alvin Pirnie of Hordville, Montie Pirnie of Phillips, and Rich Pirnie of Ainsworth; two daughters, Lillie Jones of Grand
Rex Duryea age 84 passed away Oct. 17, 2010 at the Custer Care Center #2 in Broken Bow.
Rex was born March 17, 1926, to Clarence and Myrtle (McClement) Duryea at Dunning. Rex joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II on Okinawa and Peleliu where he earned two purple hearts and numerous other decorations.
August 25, 1945, he was married to Mary Huffman and to this union three children were born.
Rex worked 32 years with the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1982.
Bob Crow, 80, passed away peacefully in his home in Arnold, Oct. 15, 2010. Robert Allen was born to Leslie Allen and Sophia Nickolena Julia (Beyer) Crow on July 29, 1930, the fourth of seven children. He was born on a farm five miles south of Arnold.
Bob attended Yucca Valley grade school most of his kindergarten year. The family moved to Mills Valley where Bob attended country school through the seventh grade. He attended eighth grade and high school in Arnold as his family moved two and a half miles east of Arnold.
Hazel Marjorie (Wilbourn) Lattimer passed away in her sleep Oct. 4, 2010, at Chardon-nay Assisted Living Center in Twin Falls, Idaho at the age of 98.
Hazel was born June 5, 1912, in Callaway, to Samuel Ferguson Baker and Amanda Zemora Overturf Baker. She had 10 siblings, most of whom were gone from home before she was born.
She married Guy Brian Wilbourn Aug. 9, 1927, at Gandy. They had three children, Nadine (Scott) McMaster, David (Mary) Wilbourn and Kay (Bob) Piva. She was widowed in 1962 after 33 years of marriage.
She met and married Guy Lattimer Sept. 14, 1964.
Bobby Lee Estergard age 81, of Callaway, was relieved of his struggle with Alzheimers, and went to be with the Lord Oct. 16, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.
Bob was born Dec.16, 1928, at Callaway to Crist and Hilder (Anderson) Estergard as the youngest in a set of triplets, including his sisters, Betty Lou and Bonny Jean. The novelty of triplets in that era attracted many visitors, as well as the interest of several newspapers and magazines. The triplets were accomplices in mischief and kept a special bond throughout their lives.
ANSELMO - - Basic country cooking, with family recipes, is how Kristi Mason describes her style. Kristi gives credit for her ability to her Grandma Peltzer, who she used to visit on the weekends as a girl.
During this time, Kristi experienced the best of both worlds. She was able to help the guys outside with the animals and come back inside to assist in the kitchen as well.
