Playoff times set for nine area teams

Times have been set for the 2010 State Football Playoffs. Classes C1, C2, D1 and D2 begin first round play Thursday afternoon and the Nebraska 6-Man playoffs begin Friday. Listed below are match-ups and start times:
Class C1
#11 Boone Central (5-3) @ #6 Broken Bow (6-2), Thursday @ 6 p.m.
Class D1
#11 Sandhills/Thedford (4-4) @ #6 Kenesaw (6-2), Thursday @ 3 p.m.
#14 Clearwater/Orchard (2-6) @ #3 South Loup (8-0), Thursday @ 5 p.m.
Class D2
#14 S-E-M (5-3) @ #3 Mullen (7-1), Thursday @ 4:30 p.m. MST
#16 Anselmo-Merna (3-5) @ Eustis-Farnam (7-1), Thursday @ 7 p.m.

Dierking places 9th at Class C State Cross Country meet

KEARNEY -- The Kearney Country Club was site of the 2010 State Cross Country Championships. Broken Bow's Cody Dierking earned a Top 10 finish placing ninth in 17:05.9. Gordon-Rushville's Cole Wellnitz was the Class C State Champion in 16:38.5. Also participating for Broken Bow was Patrick Wright who finished 82nd in 19:22.6.
Ogallala was the Class C team champion followed by Southwest Conference relative, Gothenburg who finished seventh.
In Class D, Sargent's David Vincent placed 33rd in 18:18.4. The Class D State Champion was Ainsworth's Michael Schumacher in 16:33.9.

Doris Reed, 59

Doris Fay Stauffer Loeffelholz Reed was born Feb. 4, 1951, in Kearney. She was the youngest child of Aaron and Dollie (Scott) Stauffer.
She died Oct. 10, 2010, in Denver, Colo., at the Trauma Center after an elevator wheelchair lift accident in North Platte. She had just moved from Off Broadway in Broken Bow to an assisted living center just 11 days ago.
Doris had two brothers, Gerald and LeRoy; and two sisters, Carol and Patricia.

Lillie Babcock, 85

Lillie Jewel (Pirnie) Babcock, age 85, of Grand Island, formerly of the Broken Bow, Dunning, Nebraska area, died Oct. 17, 2010, in the Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Lillie J. was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Groesbeck, Texas, to Daniel C. and Melvinie (Winn) Chavers.
Lillie was married to Gifford Pirnie who died in 1993, and later Robert Babcock.
Lillie is survived by three sons, Alvin Pirnie of Hordville, Montie Pirnie of Phillips, and Rich Pirnie of Ainsworth; two daughters, Lillie Jones of Grand

Rex Duryea, 84

Rex Duryea age 84 passed away Oct. 17, 2010 at the Custer Care Center #2 in Broken Bow.
Rex was born March 17, 1926, to Clarence and Myrtle (McClement) Duryea at Dunning. Rex joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II on Okinawa and Peleliu where he earned two purple hearts and numerous other decorations.
August 25, 1945, he was married to Mary Huffman and to this union three children were born.
Rex worked 32 years with the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1982.

Bob Crow, 80

Bob Crow, 80, passed away peacefully in his home in Arnold, Oct. 15, 2010. Robert Allen was born to Leslie Allen and Sophia Nickolena Julia (Beyer) Crow on July 29, 1930, the fourth of seven children. He was born on a farm five miles south of Arnold.
Bob attended Yucca Valley grade school most of his kindergarten year. The family moved to Mills Valley where Bob attended country school through the seventh grade. He attended eighth grade and high school in Arnold as his family moved two and a half miles east of Arnold.

Hazel Lattimer, 98

Hazel Marjorie (Wilbourn) Lattimer passed away in her sleep Oct. 4, 2010, at Chardon-nay Assisted Living Center in Twin Falls, Idaho at the age of 98.
Hazel was born June 5, 1912, in Callaway, to Samuel Ferguson Baker and Amanda Zemora Overturf Baker. She had 10 siblings, most of whom were gone from home before she was born.
She married Guy Brian Wilbourn Aug. 9, 1927, at Gandy. They had three children, Nadine (Scott) McMaster, David (Mary) Wilbourn and Kay (Bob) Piva. She was widowed in 1962 after 33 years of marriage.
She met and married Guy Lattimer Sept. 14, 1964.

Bobby Lee Estergard, 81

Bobby Lee Estergard age 81, of Callaway, was relieved of his struggle with Alzheimers, and went to be with the Lord Oct. 16, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.
Bob was born Dec.16, 1928, at Callaway to Crist and Hilder (Anderson) Estergard as the youngest in a set of triplets, including his sisters, Betty Lou and Bonny Jean. The novelty of triplets in that era attracted many visitors, as well as the interest of several newspapers and magazines. The triplets were accomplices in mischief and kept a special bond throughout their lives.

Head Start kids take dads to school

October is Head Start Awareness Month, and to mark the occasion the Broken Bow Head Start hosted a special evening Tuesday, Oct. 19.
The event, now in its 10th year, is designed to get the dads actively involved in their children's education. During Male Involvement Night, the Head Start kids and their fathers play games and enjoy a variety of activities together. It also gives the fathers the opportunity to get to know the Head Start teachers and staff.

Upgrades planned for BBPS

In their regular monthly meeting Monday evening, the Broken Bow Board of Education approved a plan to upgrade and replace some of the school’s buses in the next two years.
“This is the most complete and comprehensive transportation plan I have seen in my time on the board,” said board member Don Davis, after hearing the presentation and explanation of the plan by interim superintendent Dr. Virginia Moon.
The transportation plan outlines five specific goals for the school:
1. Bring 15 passenger vans into statutory compliance.
