Lady Indians defeat Ainsworth

AINSWORTH -- The Broken Bow Lady Indians defeated Ainsworth 3-1 Tuesday night. Broken Bow won the first set 25-20, the second 25-11, lost the third 23-25 then closed out the match in the fourth 25-12. The win is Broken Bow's sixth of the season. The Lady Indians return home for a match against Shelton Thursday which will also be parents night!

When he saw pictures of his dad’s mission trip to Peru, Rhett Safranek wanted to help. He may only be 8-years-old, but this kid proves you’re never too young to make a difference.
Craig Safranek was part of a missions trip with a group called Scripture Union back in August, 2009. On the trip the group visited a boys home, located a 45-minute boat ride from the city of Iquitos, Peru. This home houses 40-50 boys.

Local McDonald’s burglarized

The Broken Bow McDonald’s restaurant seems to have hit a streak of bad luck this year, and last week the store was the victim of a burglary.
According to Sergeant Ryan Anderson, the Broken Bow Police Department received a call from McDonald’s employees at about 4:30 a.m. Oct. 5, reporting that someone had entered the store and taken money out of the safe. Anderson says a substantial amount of cash was taken.
No arrests have yet been made in the incident. The Broken Bow Police Department continues to investigate the burglary.

S-E-M loses to Elwood in FKC Tournament

The S-E-M Lady Mustangs were defeated by Elwood 0-2 in the opening round of the Fort Kearney Conference Tournament Monday night. Fort Kearney Conference Tournament first round scores are as follows:

Vohland completes first round at State meet

Broken Bow's Brittany Vohland shot a first round 115 at the Girls Class C State Golf Tournament Monday. The Class C leader is Doniphan-Trumbull's Danielle Lemek who shot a first round score of 71. Vohland is scheduled to tee off at 10:34 a.m. today for second round play.

Litchfield woman victim of train accident

Paula Evans, 43 of Litchfield, was killed last Thursday night after pulling her vehicle into the path of an eastbound BNSF coal train near Litchfield. According to Sherman County Sheriff Michael Janulewicz, the accident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. Oct. 7, at a field crossing three miles west of Litchfield on State Highway 2. The vehicle was struck broadside and was carried three-tenths of a mile east to where the train stopped. Evans was pronounced dead at the scene by Sheriff Janulewicz after extrication by Litchfield Fire and Rescue.

No one wants to believe that domestic violence happens in Nebraska, but it is happening in our communities every day.
Staff and board members of Healing Hearts & Families joined Broken Bow Mayor R.C. McMeen Monday as he signed a proclamation declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the city. Healing Hearts & Families is working with national agencies to help promote awareness throughout this month.

Elizabeth Luther Murray

Funeral services for Elizabeth J. Luther Murray of Wausu, Nebr., will be Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Iverson Memorial Funeral Chapel with Minister Kathy Salts officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be at the Broken Bow Cemetery with military rites.
Elizabeth is survived by son Jim Murray of Creighton; daughters, Susan Phillips of Wausu, and Melanie (John) McFarlin of Beatrice; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Larry Hardy, 48

Larry F. Hardy, age 48 of Thedford, died Sept. 29, 2010, at his home.
Graveside funeral services were Monday, Oct. 4, at the Seneca Cemetery in Seneca. A Larry Hardy Memorial Fund has been established in care of the family, 83808 Hwy. 83, Thedford, 69166. Mullen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Larry Franklin Hardy was born June 28, 1962, in Ogallala to Larry and Nina (Murphy) Hardy of Seneca. He married Cathy Nozicka July 22, 1986.

Helen Blakely, 96

Helen L. Blakely, 96 of Broken Bow, died Oct. 2, 2010, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home at Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Oct. 6, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Interment was at the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dunning Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.
Helen Louise Blakely was born Nov. 26, 1913, to Samuel and Sarah "Sadie" (Pennison) Thomas, the fourth of five children. She grew up between Mason City and Litchfield.
