Ansley, Mullen earn District Titles, trip to State

The Ansley Lady Warriors and Mullen Lady Broncos are returning to the State Volleyball Tournament next weekend in Grand Island.
Ansley defeated Loomis in straight sets last night 25-11, 25-15 and 25-20 for the Class D2-4 District Championship.
Mullen defeated Hay Springs 3-1 for the Class D2-6 District Championship.
The tournament pairings for the Class D2 field has been set with Ansley earning the No. 4 seed and Mullen getting the No. 8 seed.

Mullen, Sargent, South Loup advance to playoff quarterfinals

Three area teams remain in the state football playoffs and will hit the road for quarterfinal games Tuesday night. Mullen, Sargent and South Loup cruised to impressive victories with all three winning by large margins.
In the Class D2 playoff, Mullen was a 40-14 winner over Brady and will travel to Loomis for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday night. Loomis was a 19-18 winner over West No. 2 seed St. Mary's.
Sargent easily won the battle of the Bulldog's 58-7. Sargent will head to Eustis to play the West No. 1 seed Eustis-Farnam Knights at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Terry McCandless, 53

Terry McCandless, age 53, of Broken Bow died Nov. 1, 2010, at Evanston, Wyo. Funeral services will be Nov. 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Visitation will be held today, Nov. 4, 2010, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Govier Bros. Mortuary with family greeting friends from 5-6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family. More details to appear later.

Michelle Koinzan, 53

Michelle Koinzan, age 53, of Broken Bow, died Oct. 28, 2010, at the Golden Living-Center in Broken Bow.
Michelle Ann Koinzan was born May 31, 1957, at Des Moines, Iowa to Keith and Alice (Sassy) McKee. Michelle lived in various places as a child.
She was united in marriage to John Koinzan. To this union three sons were born John, Adam and Ethan. Michelle loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed the writing classes that she took at Mid Plains Community College. She also loved horses, camping and fishing.

Peggy Morgan, 75

Margaret Ann “Peggy” Keating Morgan, 75, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away Oct. 26, 2010, at her home.
Peggy was born Feb. 9, 1935, in Loup City, to Paul and Stella Keating.
She graduated from St. Mary’s Cathedral School in Grand Island, and attended Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kan.

Emily Lewandowski, 90

Emily Lewandowski, 90 of Loup City died Oct. 28, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Emily Lewandowski was born Jan. 24, 1920, at Ashton, to John and Martha (Lorchick) Spotanski. She grew up in Ashton and attended school at District 56 in Sherman County. She was a mother's helper in the Sherman County area.
September 30, 1944, she married Leonard Lewandowski at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church at Paplin. They farmed on a farm northwest of Ashton. She and her husband moved to Broken Bow in 1973. While in Broken Bow she worked in a greenhouse and bakery.

More than 50 percent of Custer County's registered voters cast their ballots in the general election Tuesday.
With all precincts, absentee and provisional ballots counted, Cecil Burt was officially declared the winner in the race for Broken Bow mayor over incumbent Reynold C. McMeen. Below are the OFFICIAL results of the 2010 election for Custer County and surrounding area.
Number of registered voters, Custer County – 8,366
Number of ballots cast, Custer County – 4,259
Voter Turnout, Custer County – 50.91%

Kugler fulfills brother’s last request

“To my little brother, Bob - you have got more talent in your little finger than I have got in my whole body. You have got dreams - chase them!”
Poignant words written by a soldier to his little brother, also a soldier, as they went off to war. Words that Rob Kugler has taken to heart, from a man he deeply admired.
Rob, the son of Kathy Kugler, grew up in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School, before going off to serve his country as a U.S. Marine. He followed in big brother Mike Doheny’s, footsteps. Mike, too, was a Marine.

Custer Campus hosts groundbreaking

The Custer Campus Board of Directors and Custer Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) officially broke ground on the site of the seven acre Custer Campus in Broken Bow Friday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m.
U.S. Senator Ben Nelson, Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy, Mid-Plains Community College President Dr. Michael Chipps, Custer Campus Board of Directors, CEDC Board of Directors, and
officials from the City of Broken Bow participated in the ceremonies.

LeFever charged with five felonies

Luke LeFever, 22, was arraigned in Custer County District Court last week on five felony counts, all stemming from incidents which took place in Custer County Aug. 13, 2010.
LeFever has been charged with; Count 1: felon in possession of a firearm, Count 2: possession of a stolen firearm; Count 3: possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine; Count 4: willful reckless driving; and Count 5: operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest.
