Ellen Olga Kleeb Hickman was born March 15, 1911, the third child but the first to be born in the frame house of Albert and Sylvie Haumont Kleeb on the French Table near Weissert. Ellen attended Elton School and Broken Bow High School, graduating in 1929.
Upon graduation, she was offered a job in the Custer County Register of Deeds office, where she worked for several years saving toward her goal to attend a business school. In the late 1930s, she moved to Chicago to attend Greggâs Business School.
Theodore "Ted" Ostrand, age 81 of Ansley, died Friday Dec. 10, 2010, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at the Christian Life Center Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.
Theodore "Ted" J. Ostrand was born Dec. 19, 1928, in rural Custer County to John R. and Harriet (Southard) Ostrand. Ted attended rural schools and Broken Bow High School. He later attended electronics school.
Elaine M. Martindale, 81, of Holdrege and formerly of Elm Creek, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Phelps County Health Center in Holdrege. Funeral services will be today, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at the OâBrien Straatmann Funeral Home. Chaplain DeWane Dow will officiate. Interment will be at 3 pm at the Brewster Cemetery. Frank J. Beran of Sargent, age 85, died Dec. 6, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, after a brief battle with lymphoma. Born Dec. 10, 1924, at home in Valley County to Frank E. and Martha (Karty) Beran, Frank was the third of six children born to the family.
Lloyd Delbert Porter, 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. Lloyd was born June 11, 1923, at home near Lomax, Nebr. He was the second child of four children born to Joseph and Laura Etta (Whisman) Porter.
As a youth, he was raised on a farm and learned at an early age the value of hard work. Lloyd attended Eddyville High School through the 9th grade. He was most proud of earning the letter âEâ in track. After leaving high school, he went to help his father.
Leenda Ann LiaKos, 84, of Oconto, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway.
She was born July 1, 1926, at Lexington, to George and Mary (Malooley) Maloley. She went through elementary school at District 17 and attended Lexington High School.
Leenda was united in marriage to John S. LiaKos Aug. 27, 1950, at Lexington. Three sons were blessed to this marriage; Michael, Nick and Norman.
Leenda was a member of St. George Orthodox Church in Kearney as well as St. Helenâs Altar Society. She loved her church and was an active member for many years.
Elizabeth Deaver, infant daughter of Robb R. and Danielle (DuPuis) Deaver, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Anastasia (Ann) M. Gates passed away peacefully Dec. 8, 2010, with Dillard H. Gates, her loving husband of nearly 65 years at her side.
Ann was born July 2, 1926, in the small farming community of Anselmo, to Charles and Anna Mohatt. Ann grew up on a farm with her eight brothers and sisters and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1944.
Bessie Schultz, age 90 of Sargent, died Monday Dec. 13, 2010, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial will be in the Somerford Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday Dec. 17, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

While the first week of December was exceptionally busy for the Broken Bow Volunteer Fire Department, facilitator Andy Holland says calls for the year are below the average - and that is a good thing.
As of Monday, the department had been dispatched to a total of 50 fire calls throughout the 2010 year, compared with the annual average of 70. However, December started out with a bang, with the BBVFD receiving five calls in the first seven days of the month.
