Viola Spencer Lucas, 85

December 22, 2010

Viola (Ada) Spencer Lucas was born June 7, 1925. She departed this life Dec. 14, 2010, at Broken Bow.
Services were Dec. 18, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold with Pastor Dale Coates and Frank Scott officiating. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery with Arnold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Viola and her twin sister, Iola, were born at the family home near Weissert. They were two of 12 children born to Ralph and Elsie (Pirnie) Spencer.

Linn handed prison sentence

Nineteen-year-old Skyler J. Linn was sentenced in Custer County District Court Dec. 16, to 12-15 months in the Nebraska Department of Corrections. The sentence was part of a plea agreement Linn and his attorney reached with the State.
Linn was arraigned in Custer County Court Dec. 6, and was charged with three counts of burglary and one count of possession of a stolen firearm. All are Class III felonies. The burglaries involved Broken Bow businesses, including Garrett Tire, Farritor Auto Parts and Clark Dental.

District 25 thanks Cooksley for service

Finances and personnel were the key issues discussed at the Monday meeting of the Broken Bow Board of Education.
The Board voted unanimously to approve the resignation of Dave Pruden, BBHS business teacher and head girls basketball coach, effective Dec. 20, 2010. Interim superintendent Dr. Virginia Moon declined to comment on the circumstances that led to Pruden's resignation.

MPCC reps tour Custer Campus

Michael Chipps, president of Mid Plains Community College, was among those who braved the cold Monday morning to check out the progress of the new Custer Campus in Broken Bow. MPCC is one of the colleges who will be leasing space and providing classes at the campus when it opens in the Fall of 2011.
The college campus is the result of a large fundraising effort in Custer County and the surrounding area. The majority of the funds being used to build the college came from individual donors and businesses in the area, through the efforts of the Custer Economic Development Corporation.

Historical Museum improvements to come

Last week the M. Eighmy Foundation presented a generous donation to the Custer County Historical Society. This gesture was one of the foremost contributions to a fund drive that began a few weeks ago, to raise money toward improving the museum.

Accident claims lives of father and daughters

Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, officers from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Custer County Sheriff's Office investigated a triple fatality traffic crash that occurred around 2:30 p.m., two miles west of Ansley on State Highway 2.

Ellen Kleeb Hickman, 99

December 15, 2010

Ellen Olga Kleeb Hickman was born March 15, 1911, the third child but the first to be born in the frame house of Albert and Sylvie Haumont Kleeb on the French Table near Weissert. Ellen attended Elton School and Broken Bow High School, graduating in 1929.
Upon graduation, she was offered a job in the Custer County Register of Deeds office, where she worked for several years saving toward her goal to attend a business school. In the late 1930s, she moved to Chicago to attend Gregg’s Business School.

Ted Ostrand, 81

Theodore "Ted" Ostrand, age 81 of Ansley, died Friday Dec. 10, 2010, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at the Christian Life Center Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.
Theodore "Ted" J. Ostrand was born Dec. 19, 1928, in rural Custer County to John R. and Harriet (Southard) Ostrand. Ted attended rural schools and Broken Bow High School. He later attended electronics school.

Elaine Martindale, 81

Elaine M. Martindale, 81, of Holdrege and formerly of Elm Creek, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Phelps County Health Center in Holdrege. Funeral services will be today, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at the O’Brien Straatmann Funeral Home. Chaplain DeWane Dow will officiate. Interment will be at 3 pm at the Brewster Cemetery. Memorials will be established in her name. Online condolences may be submitted to www.osafh.com. O’Brien Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Beran, 85

Frank J. Beran of Sargent, age 85, died Dec. 6, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, after a brief battle with lymphoma. Born Dec. 10, 1924, at home in Valley County to Frank E. and Martha (Karty) Beran, Frank was the third of six children born to the family.
