Peggy Franzen, 52

Peggy Lyn Franzen of Broken Bow passed away unexpectedly at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center Sept. 29, 2010.
Peg was born May 13, 1958, at the Broken Bow Hospital. She was the third child born to Richard and Arlene Franzen of Arcadia.
Peg graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1976. After graduation she started working at B-D. She made many friends in the 20 years she was employed there.

Comstock couple wins conservation award

Pat and Vicky Hruby of Comstock have been awarded the 2010 Nebraska Outstanding Grassland Conservation Award by the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts. The Association presents the award annually to honor and promote outstanding grassland management.
The Hruby’s livestock operation covers 1,800 acres in western Valley and eastern Custer Counties. The Hrubys have implemented range planting and rotational grazing plans on their ranch to improve livestock forage, provide wildlife cover, and reduce erosion.

Mullen, Broken Bow girls golf tees off at Districts today

The Broken Bow Lady Indians are in Atkinson today for the District C-3 at the Atkinson-Stuart Country Club. The Mullen girls golf team will travel to Bayard for the District C-5 meet at the Chimney Rock Golf Course.

Mullen wins 4-Corners Tournament

MULLEN -- The Mullen Lady Broncos won the 4-Courners Tournament Saturday defeating Stapleton/McPherson County in straight sets 25-22 and 25-10. The Lady Broncos reached the championship game by edging Sandhills/Thedford 22-25, 25-23 and 25-19. Stapleton/McPherson County reached the championship with a two set win over Sargent 25-19 and 25-18. Sargent defeated Sandhills/Thedford 25-14 and 25-21 for third place.

Indians dominate Ainsworth

BROKEN BOW -- The Broken Bow Indians dominated the Ainsworth Bulldogs Friday night picking up their first district win. The Indians scored quickly and often in the first quarter. Tyler Kozisek was on the receiving end of a Nathan Scott pass good for a 30-yard touchdown then Adam Pracht scored with a 70-yard run on the Indian's next possession to give the Indians an quick 14-0 lead in route to a 44-0 win.
Defensively, the Indians held Ainsworth to 20 rushing yards and 49 passing yards.

Odd weather rocks the area

Most people talk about the weather when trying to make small talk. But for the past few months, folks in central Nebraska have had a lot of weather to talk about - and this last week has brought some severe and unusual events.
Severe thunderstorms made their way across central Nebraska Sept. 22, prompting tornado warnings for most of Custer County and adjoining counties. Fairly heavy damage was reported from the storm just south of Broken Bow, including a building at the Rod Leak residence three miles south of town.

Junk Jaunt welcomes Sisters on the Fly

There was a hit pop song back in the 80s titled “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” which could serve as the theme song for this national sisterhood of women. They are called Sisters on the Fly, and fun is exactly what they are all about.
A group of 21 “sisters” with 15 colorful camper trailers met at Victoria Springs State Recreation Area near Anselmo for a weekend of camping adventure and junk jaunting fun. The women came from Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado and Wyoming.

First “union” occurs at family reunion

Mike Crawford recalls knowing he was adopted from the time he was able to comprehend the term. Both he and his wife, Becky, agree that they think it’s best for a child to find out they have been adopted while they’re young.
Recently, Mike took on the task of contacting his birth family, after his son Michael needed more information about their lineage for some genealogy research. This prompted Mike to take action - and he began by calling the Nebraska Children’s Home.
