Lloyd Porter, 87

Lloyd Delbert Porter, 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. Lloyd was born June 11, 1923, at home near Lomax, Nebr. He was the second child of four children born to Joseph and Laura Etta (Whisman) Porter.
As a youth, he was raised on a farm and learned at an early age the value of hard work. Lloyd attended Eddyville High School through the 9th grade. He was most proud of earning the letter “E” in track. After leaving high school, he went to help his father.

Leenda LiaKos, 84

Leenda Ann LiaKos, 84, of Oconto, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway.
She was born July 1, 1926, at Lexington, to George and Mary (Malooley) Maloley. She went through elementary school at District 17 and attended Lexington High School.
Leenda was united in marriage to John S. LiaKos Aug. 27, 1950, at Lexington. Three sons were blessed to this marriage; Michael, Nick and Norman.
Leenda was a member of St. George Orthodox Church in Kearney as well as St. Helen’s Altar Society. She loved her church and was an active member for many years.

Elizabeth Deaver, infant

Elizabeth Deaver, infant daughter of Robb R. and Danielle (DuPuis) Deaver, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Private family services and burial will be held at a later date. Condolences may be sent to www.lbvfh.com. Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.

Anastasia (Ann) Gates, 84

Anastasia (Ann) M. Gates passed away peacefully Dec. 8, 2010, with Dillard H. Gates, her loving husband of nearly 65 years at her side.
Ann was born July 2, 1926, in the small farming community of Anselmo, to Charles and Anna Mohatt. Ann grew up on a farm with her eight brothers and sisters and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1944.

Bessie Schultz, 90

December 15, 2010

Bessie Schultz, age 90 of Sargent, died Monday Dec. 13, 2010, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial will be in the Somerford Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday Dec. 17, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Busy month for Broken Bow fire fighters

While the first week of December was exceptionally busy for the Broken Bow Volunteer Fire Department, facilitator Andy Holland says calls for the year are below the average - and that is a good thing.
As of Monday, the department had been dispatched to a total of 50 fire calls throughout the 2010 year, compared with the annual average of 70. However, December started out with a bang, with the BBVFD receiving five calls in the first seven days of the month.

Peregrine Falcon visits preschool

The School Garden in Broken Bow had a very special guest last Friday, a bird of prey.
The 3-year-old Peregrine Falcon is one of the prides and joys of Michael Garcia, a falconer from Chicago. Michael says he tries to come to Nebraska every year to allow his birds to soar, to fly, to hunt.
The Blackburns thought he and his birds would be a fun ‘Show and tell’. They were correct.
“The sport of Falconry is at last 4,000 years old,” Michael explained later. “There are those who would argue that it is at last 10,000 years old. You see the pictures inscribed as hieroglyphics. “

MUSTANGS RELOAD FOR SUCCESS
SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs are needing to reload after losing four starters to graduation from last year’s 19-5 team.
Dillan Line is the only returning starter who average 11 points and seven rebounds per game last year.
Without any seniors on this year’s team the Mustangs will need to develop depth and experience to compete for conference and district titles.

MUSTANGS EYE RETURN TRIP TO LINCOLN
SUMNER -- The S-E-M Lady Mustangs return all five starters from a team that qualified for the state basketball tournament last year.
Sara Simmons and Megan Berg return as high scorers and top rebounders for the Lady Mustangs. They will be joined by Lauren Ibach, Deidra Brooks and Tabitha Anderson who also return as starters. Senior Nissa Brown will also contribute off the bench.

MUSTANGS SEND EXPERIENCE, STRENGTH TO MATS
SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs will be strong contenders at most meets and especially at districts this season.
The Mustangs return five seniors and a sophomore who qualified for the state meet last year. John Frerichs is a three-time state qualifier while Cale Eacker and Zach Burden are two-time state qualifiers. Traven Claflin and Collin Donahoo are both qualified for state last year for Shelton High School.
Bryce Brown was the sophomore who qualified for state at 103 pounds last year.
