Services planned for Callaway teen

Austin “AJ” J. Hanson, 19, of Callaway, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, in Callaway.
Austin was born May 21, 1992, at Callaway, the son of Randy and Carrie (Stivers) Hanson. He graduated from Callaway High School in 2011, and was attending Central Community College.
Austin enjoyed ranching, farming, and anything involving the outdoors, especially hunting. He loved to hang out with his close friends, have a good time and live life to the fullest. He really enjoyed spending time with his entire family and cherished the family get-togethers.

Herb Struempler, 86

Herb Struempler, age 86, of Broken Bow, formerly of Oconto, passed away Oct. 27, 2011, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.  
He was born Oct. 27, 1925, west of Oconto, to Frederick “Fritz” and Minnie (Schwarze) Struempler. He entered into the United States Navy in 1944, and faithfully served our country in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Herb married Elsie Knispel Jan. 20, 1948, at the Christ Lutheran Church, southwest of Oconto. Together, the couple farmed and ranched west of Oconto before retiring in 1995.

Eunice Mandelko, 75

Eunice Marie Nadobny Brown-Mandelko, age 75, passed away at her home in Chadron, surrounded by family and friends Monday, Oct. 25, 2011. Eunice’s funeral mass was Saturday, Oct. 29, at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron with Father Tim Stoner and Father James Joseph officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Chadron.
Eunice was born Sept. 15, 1936, in Rushville, to Sylvester and Josephine Nadobny. She grew up on the family farm, and enjoyed spending time with her brother Albert (Buddy) and cousins until 1950, when her father died and they moved to Chadron.

Carl Schmidt, 78

Carl E. Schmidt, age 78 of Broken Bow, died at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway Oct. 27, 2011. Memorial services were Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at the Assembly of God Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Inurnment was at the Broken Bow Cemetery. A register book will be available for signing at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Mr. Schmidt was born Dec. 23, 1932, at Anselmo, to Alfred and Nellie (Turpening) Schmidt.

He lived most of his life in Broken Bow, working at BD until he retired in 1996.

Richard Reed Wattles, 81

Richard Reed (Dick) Wattles of Longmont, Colo., died Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at his home. He was 81.
Dick was born Feb. 11, 1930, in Kearney, and grew up in Broken Bow.

John Hammond, 78

November 2, 2011

John Eli Hammond was born Dec. 13, 1932 to Agnes and William Hammond of Broken Bow, and passed to eternal life Oct. 12, 2011, after complications of Alzheimer's and a stroke. The funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Clear Lake City, Texas, and he was buried Oct. 15, 2011 at the Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
Jack, as he was known, played fullback on the football team and graduated from Broken Bow, with the class of 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Mohatt, daughter of Charles and Anna Mohatt, Aug. 19, 1952.

Robert Reed, 90

Robert L. Reed, age 90, of Hamburg, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa.
Robert was born in Custer County on a farm near Arnold, to Francis Oscar and Julia Lavetta (Huff) Reed July 20, 1921. He attended elementary school at Oxford District 13 and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1939.

Stanley Sommer, 92

Stanley Sommer, age 92 of Merna, died Oct. 31, 2011, at Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Scott Harvey officiating. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 7-8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Stanley A. Sommer was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Custer County to Almore and Esther (Collinson) Sommer.

Broken Bow sisters meet adopted nephew

In this day of social networking it has become common to track down old classmates and friends, or even family members you have lost touch with over the years. For one local family, however, this ability lead to the discovery of a family member they didn’t know they had - until now.
Linda Guernsey and Ruth McConnell, sisters who live in Broken Bow, grew up in Pierre, S.D. Like many young men in the 60s, their brother Bob was sent to Vietnam. And like all too many of those young men, Bob did not return home. He was killed in action in January 1968.
