Ag Society elects new board members

The Custer County Ag Society Board of Directors gained two, not so new faces Saturday afternoon at the organization’s annual meeting. Board members are up for election every three years, and any registered voter who is a resident of Custer County, and present at the annual meeting is eligible to vote.

Kevin Cooksley, Bill Shirkey and Jess Taylor were up for election. Following the count, Steve Horn won the vote against Shirkey and Brad Parliament won the vote against Cooksley, with Taylor retaining his position.

Wayward text message leads to drug arrest

A text message sent to a Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Trooper by mistake, lead to a Kearney man being charged with marijuana possession.
Monday, Nov. 7, a Trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol Troop D Headquarters-North Platte began receiving text messages from an unknown number. The message indicated the person texting, wanted to buy drugs. The Trooper continued contact with the individual through text and established a meeting point at a location in Broken Bow.

Bow students benefit from generous gift

Thanks to the combined effort of three local civic organizations, some special needs students at Broken Bow Schools will be able to received some very special - and much needed - exercise.
Ann Kujath, life skills teacher at BBPS, approached the three groups - the Lions, the Elks and the Knights of Columbus - about the project more than a year ago. At a cost of $2,500, the suspension walker was not in the school's budget. And the three groups were more than happy to help.

John Brainard, 88

John Ryburn Brainard passed away Oct. 22, 2011, at the Plaza West Rehabilitation Center in Sun City Center, Fla. He was born Aug. 5, 1923 to Margaret and Stuart Brainard in Anselmo. John and his siblings - Elizabeth, Lorene, Robert, Willa Mae, Beverly, and Richard - lived in the Anselmo and Milburn areas. John graduated from Milburn High School, then entered St. John's Seminary in Little Rock, Ark., where he studied for 1 1/2 years.

James Washington, 53

James “Danny” D. Washington, 53, of Grand Island, passed peacefully away Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at home with his family by his side.
A celebration of his life was held Thursday, Nov. 10, at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with his brother-in-law, Tim Meguire officiating. His cremated remains were laid to rest at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home of Grand Island was in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Cool, 86

November 17, 2011

Josephine Emelia (Safranek) Cool, daughter of Caroline Vollmer Safranek and Paul Herman Safranek, was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Merna, at home on the family farm. Josephine departed this life in the arms of her Lord Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.

Ronald Douglas, 74

Ronald George Douglas was born Nov. 11, 1936, at Sargent, to George and Gertrude (Daugherty) Douglas. He departed this life Nov. 9, 2011.
Cremation was chosen as Ron’s wishes and graveside services will be at a later date. All Faiths Funeral Home of Grand Island is serving the family.
Ron lost his daddy when he was 6-months-old. His mother remarried Grant Hart when he was 10-years-old, and they moved to the family farm where he liked to play on the hills by the house.
Ron attended Sargent High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1955 and served until 1958.

Walter Norden, 89

Walter E. Norden, age 89 of Farnam, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at the Cozad Community Hospital in Cozad.
Funeral services were Nov. 14, in Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Walter E. Norden was born Jan. 14, 1922, at Ansley, to Fred and Laura (Patrick) Norden. Walter joined the CCC Camp in the ‘30s and got married in 1940. To this union three boys were born; Jack, Gale, and Wayne.
He served in the United States Marines.

Phylbert Johnson, 86

Phylbert Elaine Johnson, 86 of Sargent, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, in Lincoln. She was born Feb. 19, 1925, at Westerville, to Albert and Olive (Ducker) Hallman.
She grew up in Ansley, and graduated from Ansley High School in 1942. She attended Kearney State Teachers College for two years and received her teaching certificate. She received her bachelors degree from Kearney State College in 1971. She taught kindergarten and first grade at Westerville, Oconto, Elsie and Sargent Public Schools.

Ellwyn Cochran, 78

Ellwyn E. Cochran, 78, passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, in Aztec, NM. In his words, “That’s a ripe old age for a Cochran.”
Ellwyn was a brilliant man, and lived a brilliant life. He was born on the family farm Nov. 25, 1932, in Loup County. He grew up on the farm, and had many stories to tell of farming with horses, their first tractor, and even burning down the barn while cooking sparrow eggs.
