Joan Horine, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at her home in Broken Bow. She was born July 25, 1934, to Joseph and Ingaborg (Fossum) Knoll in Virginia, Minn. She grew up in Minnesota, until her family moved to Santa Monica, Calif., during her junior year of high school. She graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1952.
She married Leroy âPeteâ D. Horine, Jr., Dec. 5, 1968, in Minden. They relocated many times over the years, living in California, Nebraska, Color-ado and Arkansas. They settled down in Broken Bow in 1980.
Lorraine Engle Still was born March 6, 1916, at home in Beeville, Texas, to Charles Stuart Engle and Nancy Mozella Ellis Engle. She passed away Feb. 13, 2011, in Broken Bow.
Her father was a commercial beekeeper and moved the bees from Texas to the northern states every year. Her parents, grandfather and two other couples founded the Sioux Honey Association when she was a child. She remembers them meeting in her home around a table on Sunday afternoons.
Reverend Raymond Frank Sorensen, son of Frank G. Sorensen and Ella Dee Rhoades Sorensen, was born Feb. 14, 1934, in Ansley. He died Feb. 6, 2011, in a traffic accident just outside of Scranton, Iowa. Ray
was 76 years of age.
Ray grew up in Ansley, and graduated from Ansley High School. In February 1953, Ray enlisted in the Marine Corp and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.
Chester Wayne Gascho, 78 of Cairo, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at the VA Hospital in Grand Island. Services were Monday, Feb. 14, at First Baptist Church in Cairo with the Rev. Jack Boling and the Rev. Eldon Elsberry officiating. Burial was in Sand Valley Cemetery at Callaway with the Rev. Dean Hidle officiating. Apfel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gascho was born July 5, 1932, in Broken Bow, to Arthur and Barbara (Stutzman) Gascho.
Daniel E. Snyder was born June 28, 1919, in Silver Creek, the 10th of 12 children to Sam and Etta Snyder. He died in Sublimity, Ore. Feb. 7, 2011, at age 91.
In January 1933, Sam Snyder built a house on the back of a 1929 flatbed Chevy truck. He filled the house with the family and pulled their belongings on a trailer behind, and moved to Oregon. They arrived in Evens Valley, just north of Silverton, March 8, 1933.

It isnât going to be business as usual for the Custer County Ag Society. It canât be. Faced with aging buildings and an increase in expenses, the Custer County Fair Groundsâ Board of Directors are having to take a hard look at ways to increase revenue and decrease expenses.
They canât have a repeat over last year, when they ended their fiscal year $38,775,63 in the red.
âTough times call for tough choices,â said Ag Society President Kevin Cooksley, âand we arenât exempt from those choices.â

After years of giving to the schools and the community, one of Broken Bowâs own is being honored by his peers for his service.
Dennis âRockâ Jones has been selected as one of 10 Nebraska State Outstanding Service Award Winners by the Nebraska State Interscholastic Ath-letic Administrators Association (NSIAAA). Jones will be honored and awarded at the organizationâs Spring Luncheon March 9, at the Champions Club across from Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
SARGENT - - The bid has been awarded and construction is slated to begin April 1, or as soon as the spring weather allows, on a project to rebuild the Sargent Diversion Dam.
Perrett Construction of Valentine, was awarded the contract as the low bidder on the Sargent Diversion Dam at the regular meeting of the board of directors of the Middle Loup Public Power and Irrigation District in Arcadia Feb. 7. The bid, which was submitted and accepted, was in the amount of $2, 150,297.88.

A requested breath alcohol test delayed the sentencing of a Broken Bow man in Custer County District Court last week.
Kyle McLaughlin, 56, was scheduled for sentencing on a charge of 4th offense Driving Under the Influence, in district court Feb. 10. However, prior to the proceeding the state requested a breathalizer test be performed on the defendant. McLaughlin blew .23 at that time.
