Fair calendar gets reworked

Come August, get ready to have a calendar handy, Custer County’s Fair events won’t be in their usual places. Brought on by a variety of reasons, the conversation on the street is producing mixed opinions. Change doesn’t come easy.
Some are brought on by finances, others by the challenge of gathering volunteers.
The Ag Society was faced with a year that ended with the organization having to make serious adjustments on their budget, reducing expenses and relooking at how to bring in additional revenue.

Goin’ Green: CPPD’s ‘ugliest fridge’ gets replaced

It’s not always an honor to win the “ugliest” of anything. However, in the case of the “Ugliest Fridge Contest,” put on by Custer Public Power and Nebraska Public Power District, having the ugliest fridge was precisely the goal.
Mike and Rachelle Ryan of Berwyn entered their 27 year-old fridge into the contest and are now the proud owners of a new energy efficient, Energy Star refrigerator.
“They asked me not to tell anyone until it was announced on the radio the next morning.” Rachelle explains, “It was almost too good of news to keep to myself.”

CHIEF EGG IS FOUND!!

Hunters, look no further - the Custer County Chief Easter egg has been found! Sisters Rachel Simmons, age 4 (left) and Elissa Simmons, age 6, followed the clues in the April 21 Custer County Chief which led them to the hidden egg, located at the Custer County Courthouse.
The girls are the daughters of Russ and Michelle Simmons. The family relocated to Broken Bow about a year ago, and therefore were not familiar with the history of the area which was referred to in some of the clues.

Wayne Benzler, 91

April 21, 2011

Wayne Benzler age 91 of Broken Bow formerly of North Platte died Monday February 21, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
Memorial services will be Saturday April 23, 2011 at 1:30 PM at the Weissert Church of God at Weissert with Marvin Peterson officiating. Inurn-ment will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery at Weissert.
Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of the arrangements.
Beverly Dewayne "Wayne" Benzler was born April 21, 1919, at Pleasanton, to Fred and Hazel M. (Staley) Benzler. Wayne was married to Ethel L. Brown at North Platte Jan. 15, 1943.

Sandy Talbot, 86

G. Verlene Talbot, age 86, of Broken Bow, passed away March 26, 2011, at the GoldenLiving Center in Broken Bow.
Sandy Talbot was born Oct. 15, 1924, the third child of Wendell and Edna (Jacobsen) Cosner. She was born at Lillian, and attended school at Lillian, graduating from Gates High School in 1942. After high school, she attended Omaha School of Beauty. Returning to Broken Bow, she started as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until her retirement in 1982.

Ivan Coleman, 80

Ivan Coleman was born Oct. 16, 1930, in the rural Cliff Community near Merna, to Clarence and Mabel (Schaad) Coleman. he left this life April 12, 2011, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow, due to a lengthy illness following a stroke Sept. 23, 2010.
Ivan received his elementary education at the Fairview School District and graduated from Merna High School in 1949, with sports being one of his greatest interests. he was a member of the Nebraska state champion football team in 1948.

District patrons urged to answer the call

All voters in the Broken Bow School District have an opinion, and the school board and administrators would like to hear them.
Starting next week, all registered voters within School District 25 will begin receiving telephone survey calls. According to Broken Bow Superintendent Dr. Virginia Moon, the main goal of this survey is to find out what is important to the community in terms of the schools.
“This is to help us know the hopes and wishes of the community as we move forward,” Dr. Moon explained.

BBPS approves new administrator

With a unanimous vote by the Board of Education, the Broken Bow School district will benefit from the addition of a new administrator beginning next fall.
A 210-contract was approved at the April 18 meeting for Kirk Crawley as Assistant Elementary Principal, with a salary of $65,500. Crawley has served the district as elementary teacher for more than 30 years.

Chief brings home 12 NPA awards

The Custer County Chief is standing tall. The newspaper walked away with 12 awards from this year’s NPA (Nebraska Press Association) “Better Newspaper Contest.”
The Chief was honored Saturday with two first place finishes, six seconds, and four thirds at the state’s annual Nebraska Press Convention in Lincoln.
“I am so proud of the staff, and of what they are able to accomplish,” said Publisher Deb McCaslin. “To even be mentioned in the General Excellence division is tough, much less come home with second place honors in that department.”

Indians travel to Minden Invite

MINDEN -- The Broken Bow boys and girls traveled to Minden last Tuesday. The boys team finished fourth behind team champion Hastings Adam Central, Holdrege and Cozad.
Broken Bow’s Patrick Wright and Cody Dierking continue to lead the Indians in the distance races. Wright placed second in the 1600 meter run and third in the 3200 meter run while Dierking placed fourth in both events.
