Robert E. Duryea, age 83 of Broken Bow, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Custer Care Center 1 in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be Monday June 20, 2011, at 10 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at York.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 19, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

George T. Govier, age 86, of Broken Bow, died Saturday June 4, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.
Funeral services were June 8, at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Duane Osnes officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Weissert Church of God.
Dorothy June (Kellogg) Smets, age 74 of Broken Bow, died June 5, 2011, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Dorothy was born July 10, 1936, to Claude and Clara (Kellogg) at Gates. She attended Gates Public Schools and then attended Broken Bow High School graduating in 1955. August 21, 1954, she was married to Herb Smets. To this union a daughter, Sue, was born.
Theresa (Tracy) Elliott, 94 of Thedford, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at her home. Funeral services were Saturday, June 4, at United Congregational Church in Thedford. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery at Thedford with Arnold Mullen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Cemetery.
Theresa Barbara Abraham was born at home Dec. 3, 1916, to Albert and Sophia (Kolar) Abraham near Ravenna. She was called Tracy from the time she entered school at the age of 4.
Evelyn Mae Weatherly, 83, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island. A Memorial Service will be June 18, at 2 p.m. in All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island, with inurnment in Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway at a later date. Dan Naranjo will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Evelyn was born in Broken Bow, Feb. 8, 1928, the daughter of John and Lila (Spencer) Piper. She received her education at Broken Bow High School.
Leola Edith (Pete) Gibson Rourke, 91, died Monday, May 30, 2011, at Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg, Ore., of natural causes after a long struggle with Alzheimers disease.
Leola was born Dec. 24, 1919, in her grandparents sod house at Eudell, in Custer County, and raised in Broken Bow. She married Joseph William (Joe) Rourke Jan. 19, 1938, in Boise, Idaho. He preceeded her in death April 19, 2006.

Throughout the Hero Flight to Washington, D.C. this past weekend, people approached the World War II veterans - shaking their hands and thanking them for their service. Such was the case when the group visited the World War II Memorial, when the camera caught these two young girls thanking Les McCormick, left, of Brewster, and Arleigh Sintek of Ansley.

ANSLEY - - Eugene Raphael Chartraw was still in high school when he registered for the U.S. Army, and enlisted right out of high school in 1944. During the next two years he experienced hand-to-hand combat, was listed as Missing In Action, and was a guard at the Nuremberg Trials. But the last thing he considers himself is a hero.
Chartraw had been classified as farm deferment, but he didn’t take it. Instead he enlisted, prepared to do whatever he was called upon to do in defense of our country and our freedoms.

OCONTO - - God seemed to be smiling on the Oconto Volunteer Fire Department Saturday by providing picture perfect weather for the annual Blowin’ the Doors Off BBQ. And plenty of people took advantage of that nice weather to enjoy some great food, live entertainment and a good time with family and friends.
The population of Oconto increased by roughly 12.11 times Saturday night, with a total estimated attendance of 1,829. Oconto’s current population, according to the 2010 census, stands at 151.
The attendance figures broke down as follows:

Ronald J. Vincent, 49 of Sargent, appeared in Custer County District Court last week for arraignment. After reaching a plea agreement with the state, Vincent entered pleas of No Contest to three felony counts.
Vincent had originally been charged with seven felonies, following an April 26 incident northwest of Sargent in which he lost control of his 1994 Ford pickup and hit an embankment. Vincent threatened two passers-by who stopped to render aid, with a gun he had in the seat of the pickup. The two men were able to wrestle the gun away from Vincent.
