Foundation announces spring grant awards

July 15, 2011

The Custer County Foundation reviewed grant requests for the period ending April 30, 2011 and is awarding a total of $17,800.00 to Custer County organizations.
“It’s always an exciting time when we get to announce our grant recipients,” said Lisa Bell, Executive Director of the Foundation.
“The generous support we receive from our donors through our annual Custer County Christmas event enables the Foundation to continue to increase the amount of funds granted out each year.”

Sadie Daake and Canton Cole would like to announce their engagement and upcoming weddig this Saturday, July 16, 2011, in Omaha.
The bride is the daughter of leonard and Denise Daake of Merna and the late Yolanda Daake. She is a 2002 graduate of Anselmo-Merna High School, and a 2006 graduate of Concordia University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemmistry. She graduated in May 2011 from Indiana University School of Optometry as a doctor of optometry.

Drew Danielle Zutavern and Jose Eduardo Dimas, both of Kearney, were united in marriage April 23, 2011 at Spirit of Life Open Bible Church, Kearney. Pastor Greg Mast officiated.
Parents of the couple are Shawn and Lori Zutavern of Dunning and Jose and Sonia Dimas of Kearney. Grandparents of the bride are Cortez and Rita Lewis of Litchfield and Bill and Meredith Zutavern of Dunning. Grandmother of the groom is Julia Bado of Norwalk, Calif..

Mabel Ellingson, 81

Mabel B. Ellingson, age 81 of Broken Bow, died July 9, 2011, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center. Funeral services were Friday July 15, 2011, at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with Minister Kathy Salts officiating. Interment will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.
Mabel was born March 2, 1930, at Merna, to Everett and Viola (Sells) Mattox. She received her education at Broken Bow Schools.

Gerrit Hamblin, 87

July 15, 2011

Gerrit Hamblin, 87, longtime Broken Bow educator, entered his eternal rest June 21, 2011, at the Melham Medical Center. Funeral services were June 24, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Henry Duerksen officiating. Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Gerrit Arthur Hamblin was bom May 15, 1924, in Sioux City, Iowa to Miles and Nell Hamblin. He was the youngest child born into a family of three sisters. Gerrit graduated from high school at the "Castle on the Hill (Sioux City H.S.)

J.D. Gibson, 89

J.D. Gibson, age 89 of Broken Bow, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at his home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Wednesday, July 13, in the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Lila Picton and the Rev. Corey Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. Memorials have been established to the Broken Bow United Methodist Church.

Kimberly Grubtill, 44

Kimberly Jean Grubtill, age 44, was born Dec. 11, 1966, to Nancy Leonard and Edward Furasek in Omaha. She died June 23, 2011, at Broken Bow.
Kimberly was employed by Custer Care Center in Broken Bow until unable to work.
She graduated from Omaha Bensen High School in 1985. She lived in Hill City, S.D. for 12 years, and in Broken Bow since 2007.
Kim is survived by her husband, Jeff; two sons, Matthew and Noah; sisters, Shelli Joshepson, Rhonda, Sherry and Robyn; and brothers, Ronie and Bernie.

Kenneth Templin, 84

Kenneth Elwood Templin was born Jan. 26, 1927, to Otto and Mary Graff Templin on a small farm south of Mason City, in Custer County. Growing up on the family farm, Ken learned how to care for livestock, drive a team of horses, operate a tractor and work hard. He was active in 4-H, was captain of the Mason City High School football and basketball teams and graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1945.

Josie Harrold, 47

Josie L. Harrold, 47 of Fremont, died Sunday, July 10, 2011, at her home. She was born Aug. 29, 1963, at Omaha.
She grew up in Fremont and was a graduate of Fremont High School. She moved to North Bend in 1994, and then to Harvard, in 1996. She lived at Broken Bow from 1998 until returning to Fremont in 2004. She was employed as a cook at the Coffee Pot Café in Fremont.

Mitchell Whaley, 59

Mitchell Lynn Whaley was born Sept. 14, 1951, to Lynn Arthur and Betty Jo (Liner) Whaley in Arnold, and died July 1, 2011, in Callaway.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Jo (Gerry) Wicks; children, Fontaine Crouch of Enid, Okla., Dustin Whaley of Chandler, Ariz., Samantha Whaley of Omaha, and Austin Whaley of Sioux Falls, S.D.; granddaughters, Cierra Cofer, Kaylyn Madison and Melia Crouch; sister, Sony Jones of Sandy, Utah; brother, Chuck Whaley of Alliance; step-brother, John (Shauna) Pursley of Aurora, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Broken Bow Homecoming parade will start at 1:45 at the school and proceed south on 9th street....
