The Broken Bow Board of Education moved another step closer in preparation for a school facilities project Tuesday evening. In a special meeting, the board approved hiring BD Construction as the construction manager at-risk company.
The board met, also in a special meeting, Monday evening for the purpose of interviewing construction manager candidates. Three candidates were interviewed for the job, and the board agreed all were good candidates. However, the facilities committee recommended BD Construction and the board agreed.
MULLEN -- Hooker County Tribune publisher Gerri Peterson is this yearâ€™s recipient of the National Newspaper Associationâ€™s Daniel M. Phillips Leadership Award. She will be honored this fall during the associationâ€™s 125th Annual Convention in Albuquerque, N.M.
NNA established this award in 2007 to honor Daniel Morris Phillips, an award-winning writer, photographer and assistant publisher of the Oxford Eagle, who died in 2005 at the age of 47.
Owner out of town for the weekend;
Returned Sunday to find his home gone.
An early morning fire last weekend ended in the total loss of a home near Merna, and prompted a search for the home owner.
According to Merna Fire Chief Dave Beals, the call came in at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, of a house fire on the Victoria Springs Road east of Merna at the Robert Schmitz residence. Beals says when the fire department arrived at the scene they found the house fully involved with fire. He was also initially unsure whether or not anyone was in the house.
Last week, area fire departments and emergency response personnel had a rare opportunity to receive training in handing an accident involving hazardous materials.
The training program is called TransCaer, and is a nationwide program sponsored by Dow Chemicals. Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad, NEMA and the Nebraska State Patrol were some of the entities responsible for brining this professional training program to Nebraska, and to Broken Bow.
Helen Marena (Jones) Heller was born May 4, 1924, and passed into eternity June 29, 2011, at the age of 87. Helen was the eldest daughter of Chloie and Earl Jones, born in Hedrick, Iowa. As she often shared, her birth weight was under five pounds and they put her in a shoe box and kept her warm on the back of the cook stove at night.
Jens Michael Christensen, known to most as Mic, 80, of Broken Bow, died June 29, 2011, at Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Mic was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Berwyn to Christian and Elsie Ogal (Wright) Christensen during a winter blizzard, a great surprise as twins had not been expected.
He attended all 12 years of schooling at Berwyn, graduating in 1948, then attended Kearney State College for one year.
Fern Arlene Lanham, 96, of Arnold, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
Fern was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Boone County Iowa, to Olive (Whalen) and Grover Sturtz. Fern moved to Nebraska at the age of 3, to the Middle Loup River on a ranch. They later moved to a ranch north of Whitman and later to the Sturtz Ranch north of Stapleton. After graduation from Mullen High School in 1932, she married Robert Lanham March 17, 1936. They moved to Arnold where they raised four children, Zandra Kyne, Sharon Storkan, Douglas Lanham and Donna Bond.
Delores Irene Clouse, 74, or Arnold passed away at the Golden LivingCenter in Broken Bow, Tuesday, June 28, 2011. She was born Oct. 25, 1936, in Broken Bow, to Dollie Bertha Irene (Timmons) and Glen Lewis Middleton.
She grew up in Oconto, Callaway, Arnold and Stapleton and received her education in Oconto, Callaway and Arnold.
Delores and Charles (Neb) Clouse, Jr. were united in marriage Aug. 2, 1954, in Chadron, after which the couple lived on a ranch in Stapleton and in Arnold, where she worked at the Model Cafe and Archieâ€™s Cafe as a waitress.
Cheyenne Nacole Sisk from Barnard, Mo., and Justin Thomas Hoesel from Callaway, are engaged to be married Saturday, July 9, 2011, in Callaway.
Cheyenne is the daughter of Benny and DeeAnn Sisk of Barnard, Mo. Justin is the son of Tom and Jodi Hoesel of Callaway.
Rudy and Sherry Glur of Oxford, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jenny Glur to Ned Pelster, son of Conrad Pelster and Aleta Ambler of Arnold.
Jenny is a graduate of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and is employed with Farm Bureau Financial Services.
Ned is a graduate of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and is employed with Cargill.
An Aug. 27 wedding is planned.
