The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met Wednesday, Dec. 21, with the Board unanimously authorizing MPCC President Dr. Michael Chipps to execute an agreement to transfer title to the premises known as the Broken Bow Extended Campus to Mid-Plains Community College, and to execute a Deed of Trust in favor of Custer Campus, Inc, to secure performance under that agreement. The action is required by MPCC Board Policy 3450, Mid-Plains Community College Property, which requires an affirmative vote of at least two-thirds of all Board members is required.

For the past 18 years, people have been singing the Blues in Arnold. This week many folks are experiencing a case of âthe bluesâ as the announcement was made that the annual South Loup River Blues & BBQ, more commonly known as Blues Fest, is calling it quits.
Blues Fest is the âbabyâ of KCNI/KBBN owner and general manager David J. Birnie, who organized the first event in 1993 as a station promotion. Through the station, Birnie had been involved with some fair shows and had experienced some successes with those, so he decided to take his love of Blues and see if he could make an event fly.
Harry Duane Jacobsen was born Aug. 14, 1954, in Visalia, Calif., to Harry and Norene (Hanlon) Jacobsen, and passed from this life Dec. 16, 2011, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center while awaiting a kidney and liver transplant. He was known to many people by different names - B.J., Bud and Wiener. His card playing buddies knew him as "Duey" - his friends at work called him "Jake". To his family he was "Duane"- that differentiated him from the other "Jakes" in the Jacobsen family.
Duane Erikson of rural Arnold passed away Dec. 16, 2011, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg. Duane was born Oct. 8, 1924, on the family farm on Tallin Table south of Arnold to Martin and Hazel (Cole) Erikson, their only child.
Duane grew up farming and ranching. Duane attended rural grade school at District 240 and graduated from Arnold High School in 1942, where he was active in music. After high school, he continued working on the family farm and ranch, never wanting to do anything else.
Johnny R. McCarty, 86 of Grand Island, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Cremation has taken place and burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Dale Valley Cemetery at Merna. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mr. McCarty was born Oct. 6, 1925, at Merna, the son of Michael and Irene (Dale) McCarty.
Survivors are a brother, Lawrence (Mike) McCarty of Seattle, Wash., and 12 nieces and nephews.
John J. âJackâ OâNeill, 75 of Gilbert, Ariz., passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 7, 1936, in Anselmo to Josephine and George OâNeill, John had three brothers; Jim, Gary and Tom.
He moved his family to Arizona in 1968, where he worked for Valley National Bank. He enjoyed golf and was a long-time member of the Mesa Country Club.
John contributed generously to professional organizations and community groups - among them, the HoHoKams where he was past president serving as the Big Ho.
Judge James J. Orr has been named County Court Presiding Judge of the 8th Judicial District (Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Custer, Garfield, Greeley, Holt, Howard, Keya Paha, Loup, Rock, Sherman, Valley, and Wheeler Counties) beginning January 2012. The Nebraska Supreme Court approved the nomination of Judge Orr, whose name was submitted by his fellow county court judges for the third consecutive year.

Only three action items appeared on the agenda for the Broken Bow Board of Educationâs December meeting, but one of those items was controversial enough to draw a large crowd - in fact, the crowd was large enough to warrant the board moving the meeting to the media center to accommodate the crowd.
December 20th
On December 14, the Anselmo-Merna junior kindergarten boarded the âtrainâ to visit the âNorth Poleâ!
