Woodward steps back in time in Moldova

The Republic of Moldova is a tiny landlocked state in Eastern Europe, located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south. For nearly three months this past summer, this small nation was home to Broken Bow alum Tara Woodward.
Tara attends Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where she is a junior majoring in accounting with a minor in Christian missions. As part of the school’s missions program, Tara had the opportunity to visit Moldova with the group HOPE International.

Board gets block grant update; approves meteorological towers

Eight low-income families in Custer County will get their homes upgraded with low monthly payments and zero to little interest, thanks to funds made available through Community Development Block Grants.
Judy Peterson with Central Nebraska Housing Development gave an updated report of the grants to the Custer County Board of Supervisors at their monthly meeting Oct. 11. The county had been awarded a $254,000 grant to rehabilitate eight homes, each receiving a maximum of $25,000.

New pool is right on schedule

The Broken Bow Aquatic Center is taking shape. The water slide is in and the play features have arrived. According to City Manager Tony Tolstedt, construction is ahead of schedule. “We are on track to open at the start of the 2012 swim season.”
A $3,250,000 bond for the project was approved in May 2010 by a 508 to 504 vote. On April 4, 2011, city officials broke ground. The project has been nearly a decade in planning.

Area youth experience mentor hunt

Last weekend, area youth were given the opportunity to learn a variety of outdoor sporting activities from experienced hunters at the Nebraska One Box Complex near Broken Bow. Created in 1996, Pheasants Forever, along with the Nebraska Games and Parks Commission, developed a program, the Youth Mentor Hunt, for kids age 12 to 15 to experience hunting and related activities.

Free Coats!

The Community Connection in Broken Bow is giving away free coats beginning Tuesday, Oct. 18 and ending...well, when the coats run out! Come down to the Community Connection and prepare for the winter season. There is a one-coat-per-person limit. The Community Connection is located on the north side of the Broken Bow Square and is open Monday-Thursday from 10-5:30.

Committee examines sex offender registry rules

LINCOLN -- The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee is examining the effects of a federal statute that has changed Nebraska law on sex offenders, their classification and their presence on national sex offender registries.
The Oct. 11 meeting was held to study the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 and recent changes to Nebraska statutes on sex offender registries.

The Lady Warriors dominated throughout the entire match, showing their talents as they downed the Lady Knights in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-16. They are now 20-1.

Broken Bow sends team to state cross country tournament; A-M sends two runners

The Broken Bow Cross Country team is sending their boys team to the 2011 Nebraska Cross Country Championships in Kearney this Friday. Cody Dierking, Patrick Wright, Andrew Pracht, Evan Rose, Andrew Bailey and Grant Phillips will run for the Indians. The Lady Indians will be sending one runner as well. Freshman Shannon Myers qualified after finishing in the top-10. The Anselmo-Merna Cross Country team will send two runners. Libby Cramer and Blake Yarrington qualified after they both placed in the top-15.
