Bow Residents Featured in NET News Program

Broken Bow residents Michael Steckler and Andra White asked questions and shared their opinions as part of the NET Television election year project "Voter Voices." Steckler talked about health care and White asked questions about immigration during a videotaped roundtable discussion at the Broken Bow Public Library last April. Their comments, along with others from across the state, are part of a new NET Television special "Campaign Connection 2012: Voter Voices," airing Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. CT on NET1/HD.

Nebraska child welfare system explores changes

LINCOLN--Nebraska’s child welfare system might face another major change by the summer of 2013, continuing the overhaul of the system begun by the Legislature last spring.
The Legislature’s Health and Human Services committee held a hearing on Friday morning to explore changes to the way children enter the foster care system, how reports of child abuse are screened and investigated and how that can contribute to the number of children in foster care.

Pink tractor draws attention for cancer research

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and each year at this time the local Breast Cancer Support Group hosts a cancer walk in downtown Broken Bow - to raise funds, and awareness, for a disease that afflicts so many.
Joann Still is the chair of the local support group, which she started in 2005, one year after her own breast cancer diagnosis. However, she and the other members of the group - all breast cancer survivors - are quick to point out this walk is not just for breast cancer. Rather, the money raised during the event go to research for all cancers.

Bowers appointed County Attorney

The Custer County Board of Supervisors Tuesday appointed Steven Bowers as the new Custer County Attorney.
The office of Custer County Attorney was vacated when Tami Schendt was appointed to succeed Gary Washburn as County Court Judge. There are two years left on Schendt’s term as county attorney.
Bowers was one of four candidates interviewed for the position by the board Sept. 25. He was recently appointed to serve as Deputy County Attorney by acting County Attorney Glenn Clark.

County buries time capsule ... open 2112

The year 2012, marks the centennial of the Custer County Courthouse. In August, a big centennial celebration was hosted by the county, and just this week the final step in the centennial celebration - the burial of a time capsule - took place.
A committee was organized about a year ago to work out the details of the time capsule. Items, depicting what the county was like in 2012, were gathered to be placed in the capsule. It is hoped that during the bicentennial year, 2112, the capsule will be dug up and opened.
