William "Bill" Rickertsen, 89

December 10, 2012

William "Bill" Rickertsen, 89, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died Dec. 3, 2012, at his home in Gothenburg.
He was born June 30, 1923, in Lexington, the son of Adolph and Henny (Seehusen) Rickertsen.
Bill married Lucile Smith on May 23, 1948, at Sumner; to this union four children were born: W. Alan, Archie, J.D. and Lori.
Bill farmed for many years and was involved in Farm Bureau, serving as the County President; 4-H, including being a leader for many years. He also served as a school board member. He was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church where he had been a member for over 50 years.

Ansley School is tops in the state

ANSLEY - - Proudly displayed above the main entrance to Ansley Public Schools, is the slogan "Enter here to grow in wisdom." It is a philosophy the staff and administration of the school take very seriously - and last week they discovered just how much that commitment has paid off.

UPDATE: Custer Foundation 'Puts on the Ritz'

Official numbers aren't in, but if the bids are an indication, the Custer County Foundation's annual dinner Saturday (Dec. 8) was a huge success. Early estimates top last years earnings of $65,000 by over $10,000. The Municipal Building in Broken Bow played host, with those present there to support of the work the Foundation.

Boys Basketball: Broken Bow moves past Ord

Broken Bow earned a win over Ord Saturday night with the final score being 55-38. The Indians put the game away with strong free throw shooting in the fourth quarter and a tough defensive effort. For full details, check out the next edition of the Custer County Chief.

Sargent Burwell has monster day in Merna Invite win

Sargent Burwell muscled their way to victory in the Anselmo-Merna wrestling Invite Saturday, finishing with 275.5 points. They had winners in seven weight classes. For full details, see the next edition of the Custer County Chief.

Scheer splits second-round win at NFR

LAS VEGAS – He’s back.

Cort Scheer proved it quite well Friday night during the second go-round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, scoring an 84.5-point ride on Three Hills Rodeo’s Big Jet to share the round win with Jake Wright and Wade Sundell. It’s the second go-round victory in his second qualification to ProRodeo’s grand finale, and it was nice to collect the $14,527 paycheck this early in the NFR.

Drought costs Nebraska corn crop nearly a quarter billion dollars

This past summer, the heat arrived and the rain went away. All of Nebraska and about two-thirds of the United States was left in a crippling drought. The drought caused corn, Nebraska’s biggest cash-crop, to take a serious hit. Despite higher prices, the Nebraska Corn Board’s latest estimates are that Nebraska’s corn crop will be worth about $240 million less this year than last year’s.
