April 16th
The Nebraska Press Association conference was held this weekend in Lincoln. The Custer County Chief received several awards at the conference. In addition, Deb McCaslin, publisher of the Chief, was awarded the Nebraska Leadership Award. More details will appear in this week's Chief.

Twin Loup's Jed Fenske set a new class D record in the pole vault on Thursday. His vault at the Burwell Invite reached 14' 10 1/2''. The previous state record was held by Axtell's Brandon Benson at 14' 9 1/2'', which he set in 2011. See this week's Custer County Chief for more information.
April 14th
Severe weather was in the area this weekend. Callaway had ping-pong ball sized hail on Saturday morning and there were verbal reports of baseball-sized hail in the Arnold area as of Saturday night. The Arnold-Callaway Prom was postponed until Sunday due to the weather. There were also reports of a tornado north of Anselmo around 7:45 pm.

*Dana Ruth Fink was a community correspondent for the Custer County Chief for many years. We appreciate all she contributed, and she will be greatly missed.
Dana Ruth Milleson Fink, of Elsmere, was born to Frank and Lola Milleson Jan. 6, 1923, at Thedford. Dana Ruth passed away April 10, 2012, in Kearney.
She moved with her family to the Elsmere area in 1934. Dana Ruth graduated from Thedford High School in 1940. After completing teacher's training, she taught school at South Wrage, Calf Creek, north of Seneca and at the Pleasant Hill School for a total of 40 years.
Former Broken Bow resident Donald L. Vanderheiden, 77, passed away April 8, 2012 while in the hospital in Inverness, Fla.
Don was born and raised in the Valentine area. After high school he attended Chadron State College where he established and competed as a bull rider on the Chadron State Rodeo Team and competed in Golden Gloves boxing.
Obituary of Darrell James Nelson, as written by Darrell, because he wanted it to "be correct". Perhaps there is a little ego involved, but after 84 years of humble, that should be excusable. There may be some opinion, but mostly just facts that can be confirmed if you want to take the trouble. These final words are a little long, but it averages out to about one minute for each decade, and I do not think that is unreasonable.
Joe Goeden age 84 died Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Memorial services were Tuesday, April 10, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary in charge of arrangements. The family requests that memorials be given to the Broken Bow Library or the donor's choice.
Tommy Merle Fred, 57 of Merna, passed away April 3, 2012. Tommy was born Sept. 16, 1954, at Broken Bow, to Alvie and I. Dee Fred. He lived his first year of life on the Upstream Ranch moving in succession from the Nicklos Ranch and finally to the Lazy J-C Charolais ranch, where he currently lived, north of Callaway.

Monday was a big day in Broken Bow, as the community welcomed Governor Dave Heineman to celebrate the completion of several businesses and projects.
The events for the day were organized by the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce, and included a rigorous schedule with stops every 20 minutes throughout the afternoon. The day was planned to celebrate the growth and accomplishments in the community within the past year.

The Anselmo community asked that the train crossing be left open, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe has agreed.
The general consensus of opinion following a community meeting in Anselmo last week was made perfectly clear as each of the following entities spoke up: The Anselmo Fire Department, Merna Rescue, The Anselmo Township Board, and The Andersons, Inc. Each wanted the crossing left open.
