Low and away.
That’s the rule pitcher Michael Coleman stuck to in the season opener against Gothenburg Saturday.
The philosophy didn’t steer him wrong. Broken Bow cruised to a 10-0 victory behind Coleman’s 10 strikeouts.
Coleman’s confidence in his arm didn’t leave him surprised at his stellar outing.
“It was nice because I didn’t have to throw a lot of curve balls. I just threw a lot of fastballs low and away and they couldn’t handle it.”
While striking out 10, Coleman was also extremely efficient, allowing no walks and only giving up two hits in his five innings of work.

The Spirit softball team recovered from a tough first inning, where they allowed nine runs, to win 18-12 in the home opener against Ravenna. Further coverage will be provided in the June 7 edition of the Custer County Chief.

While the Spirit softball team didn’t come away with a win in the tournament to open the season, they did come away with some valuable lessons.
“We’ve been working on covering the bases when the other team bunts a lot,” said pitcher/shortstop Kelsie Myers.
In the team’s second round robin game against Alliance, errant throws in the infield aided an Alliance victory.

Trent Esch, 35 of Broken Bow, was arraigned in Custer County District Court Thursday morning on two felony charges: Count 1 - use of a weapon to commit a felony, and Count 2 - criminal mischief.
The charges stem from a March 18, 2012, incident in which Esch is accused of shooting at an unoccupied Custer County Deputy Sheriff's vehicle in front of the home of Deputy Sheriff Dan Spanel.
