Violet Nagy, 99

May 18, 2012

Violette Nagy, age 99 of Stuart, formerly of Purdum, died May 1, 2012, at the Parkside Manor in Stuart. Funeral services were Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the United Church of Christ in Purdum with the Rev. Judy Cook officiating. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements.

Gaylean Young, 68

Memorial services for Gaylene Louise Young, age 68 of Bastrop, Texas, formerly of the Sargent area, were Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Catholic Church in Sargent.
Born June 24, 1943, in Loup City, to Omer and Maxine Johnson, Gaylene passed unexpectedly in her home April 19, 2012, in Bastrop, Texas with her loving husband Bruce Young as always right by her side.

Janet Finney, 76

Janet Finney, age 76 of Merna, died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Janet Ruth Pohlreich Finney was born Nov. 27, 1935, at Anselmo to Rudy and Rose (Loughran) Polhreich. She attended Columbia Table grade school and graduated from Merna High School in 1953. She taught school for one year at Farritor School east of Victoria Springs State Park, attended Duchesne College in Omaha for one year, and then St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island for two years graduating in 1957.

Gale Payton, 80

Gale Morgan Payton, age 80, of Encampment, Wyo., took his final flight to be with Jesus May 5, 2012, at Encampment, Wyo.
He was born the youngest of nine children Jan 8, 1932, in Callaway. As a youth he grew up on the old N.M. Morgan Homestead, just a half mile north of town. He loved building and flying model airplanes. He attended and graduated from Callaway High School in 1950. He married his wife Lila Chamberlin Dec. 31, 1952, in the Mason City Methodist Church.

Broken Bow Utilities earns NMPP Energy’s Project of Year Award

LINCOLN - - NMPP Energy awarded the City of Broken Bow Utilities with a Project of the Year Award in the 1,501-5,000 population category for its LED city light conversion project at its 37th Annual Meeting and Conference in Hastings, Neb., March 28.

Good News! - - Rural Post Offices to stay open

The United States Postal Services has a problem. The organization is losing money, lots and lots of money.

One solution presented last year was to close some of the rural post offices. The residents of the local communities spoke up, and the U.S. Postal Service listened.

Area post offices listed for closure on the first go around included: Comstock, Mason City, Sumner, Oconto and Purdum. Every indication at the time was that more were to be added. Public hearings were conducted and residents were asked to provide reasons why their post office should stay open.

Glendy appointed to school board

In a special meeting of the Broken Bow Board of Education Wednesday, David Glendy was appointed to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Don Davis, effective April 30. There are two years left on that term.

Glendy was one of seven applicants who interviewed for the board position, and it took three votes on three different candidates for the board to finally reach a majority decision. Glendy received a unanimous vote of approval from the five board members - Michelle Zlomke, Matthew Haumont, Tracy Popp, John Evans and Ken Myers.

Free Fishing & Park Entry Day

On May 19, 2012, pack up the family and/or friends and head out to enjoy Nebraska's state parks. You can fish anywhere in the state and visit any Nebraska state park, state historical park or state recreation area for FREE. No park entry or fishing permit required. Also, as part of the day, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering the 15th Annual Family Fishing Clinic at select areas. In the Chief area, Victoria Springs State Recreation Area will host a clinic from 9am-6pm. You can find out more information about the day and clinics at www.outdoornebraska.org.

Broken Bow's Tanner Johnson, Marcus Miller qualify for state

Broken Bow High school fell two strokes short of qualifying for the state meet as a team, but Tanner Johnson and Marcus Miller qualified as individuals. The state golf tournament runs May 22 and 23 in Kearney.
