Nebraskaâs High School Rodeo State Finals in Hastings has come to a close, and the champions are sitting on some new saddles. Next, for the elite few, will be a run at Nationals July 14-21, 2012, at Rock Springs, Wyo. Check this weekâs paper for pictures of all of our area competitors in action, and complete results.

Vern and Velma Oatman were honored Friday evening at the State High School Rodeo in Hastings with a rodeo âLifetime Achievement Award.â As part of the presentation, Bill Manning, the president of the Mid-States Rodeo Association, said that the Oatmans have done more to promote and support High School Rodeo than anyone he knew. Vern in his remarks accepting the award said that they have a 2-year-old great-grandchild, so they would be around a few years longer.
June 22nd
Round one is in the record books, as the Nebraska High School Rodeo finals take place in Hastings. Sterling Atkins, Broken Bow, nailed his calf winning the tie down roping event with a 10.03. Tyler Viers, Comstock earned his buckle by sticking the 8 seconds on his bull in a tight round and scoring a 77 and Chauncy Hesseltine, Thedford, was the lone cowboy to survive the saddle broncs.

In July, 2010, Dr. Virginia Moon was hired by the board as interim superintendent on a one-year contract. However, it did not take long for the board and the rest of the community to realize the district had gotten much more than they bargained for.

THEDFORD - - Battles are never fought nor won without coming together for the common goal. This was made evident Sunday, June 10 at the Thomas County Fairgrounds in Thedford, when friends and family - more than 250 strong - came together to fellowship in song and verse to aid Warren Haumann in his fight against multiple myeloma.
According to the Custer County Sheriff's Office:
On June 21, 2012, The Custer County Sheriffâs Office, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, arrested a 50 year old Ansley man on 10 ten counts of possession of child pornography.
A search warrant was served at the home of Anthony Lewandowski, 814 Hale Street, Ansley, Nebraska. The warrant followed an investigation in which a computer that Lewandowski possessed was found to have child pornography on it. The computer along with other electronic devices were seized.

William Herbert Spry was born June 17, 1919, in Milford, and passed away June 10, 2012, in Sparks, Nev. He grew up in Oconto. Graveside funeral services will be Friday, June 22, at 9 a.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.
Archie V. Roberts, age 91, of Ansley, died Sunday, June 17, at the Nebraska Veterans Hospital in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ansley, with the Rev. Barbara Spangler officiating. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be Thursday June 21 from 3-8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Ansley United Methodist Church or the VFW Post 3576.
Wynonna LaVonne Myers Smith, 94, of Callaway, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012, the Callaway Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.
She was born in Callaway, May 26, 1918, the daughter of Troy and Ruth Maze Myers. She was married for 69 years to her best friend and the love of her life, Foster Smith, who preceded her in death.
LaVonne graduated from Callaway High School and as a young adult was employed at the Callaway Grocery and Market. After marriage to Foster, she spent many years as a homemaker, wonderful mother, gardener, cook, quilter, and seamstress.
