Maxine Popp, 87

July 19, 2012

Maxine Popp, age 87 of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Friday, July 13, at the Burr Oak Church south of Broken Bow with the Rev. David Harder officiating. Burial was in the Box Elder Cemetery near Cumro with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.
Louise "Maxine" Popp was the only child of Marvin and Grace (Freeborn) Trew. She was born June 19, 1925, at home near Cumro. She was called to her heavenly home July 10, 2012.

Rolland George, 81

Juniata resident, Rolland E. George, 81, died Friday, July 13, 2012, at Mary Lanning HealthCare in Hastings.
Services were July 17, 2012; at Juniata United Methodist Church in Juniata with Pastor Jim Miller officiating. Burial with military rites was at Juniata Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Juniata United Methodist Church or Juniata American Legion. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Hastings was in charge of arrangements. Mary Schmitz, 94

Mary J. Schmitz, daughter of Charles and Anna (Bamesberger) Mohatt was born May 17, 1918, in Custer County, near Anselmo, the third of nine children. She passed from this life July 13, 2012, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow, at the age of 94.
Mary spent her childhood in and around Anselmo, and graduated from Anselmo High School in 1935. November 29, 1939, she married Lawrence (Bus) Schmitz of Anselmo at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Anselmo. One son and one daughter blesses this union; Gary and Carolyn.

Vivian Ritz, 74

Vivian Ilene Ritz, 74, of Comstock went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, July 17, 2012, at the Valley County Health System Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Wescott Baptist Church in Comstock. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in Douglas Grove Cemetery in Comstock. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-4 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Wescott Baptist Church or the Comstock Den. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Sears, 94

Viola Pearl (Moninger) Sears was born at Taylor May 6, 1918, to John and Luella (Fales) Moninger, and died June 15, 2012, at the age of 94.
The oldest girl in the family of 11 children, she graduated from Milburn in 1936, and married Hubert Sears of Broken Bow in 1938. They made their home in Seneca, where he worked for Western Public Service.
Their two children were born there, and in 1951, Hubert went to work for Boniville Power Company in Washington. In 1951, they moved to Eugene, Ore., where they retired and continued to live until their death - Hubert in 1991.

Board approves hiring of three secondary teachers

The Broken Bow Board of Education met for its regular monthly meeting Monday, in what could be called a bittersweet evening. It was the first official meeting under new Superintendent Mark Sievering following the departure of two-year interim superintendent, Dr. Virginia Moon.
The board approved the hiring of three new teachers to fill vacancies, in part, left by the tragic loss of Zane Harvey and Anthony Blum. High School/ Middle School Principal Ken Kujath says he feels very blessed to have found such quality candidates for the district this late in the year.

Crazy Days Run draws large crowd

The 6th Annual Crazy Days Run kicked off at 7 a.m. July 14, with 112 registered runners, walkers and bikers. Event chair Amy Wenquist said she was especially thrilled at the number of younger runners participating.
“The volunteer turnout was tremendous,” she added. Kicking off from the Melham Sports Complex, the early morning start avoided the heat of the day. Participants had their choice of a 5K, 10K, 1 Mile Walk, 10 Mile Bike or a 20 Mile Bike as their event challenge.
Hosted by the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce, it costs $20 to participate.

1st Arnold bike rally deemed success

ARNOLD - - Folks in the community of Arnold may have been missing the sounds of Blues music this month, but instead they were greeted with the sounds of motorcycles.
The Devil’s Den Motorcycle Rally took place this past weekend in Arnold, hosted by the Arnold Motorcycle Club. Hosting a rally, and forming a club, was the brainchild idea of Heidi Kulp and Holly Hornung Remund.

Armstrong honored as Distinguished Alumni

Hundreds of Broken Bow High School alumni returned to the community July 13-14 for Alumni Weekend, and one of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Broken Bow High School Distinguished Alumni Award.
One change that was made this year was that the award was presented during the all-alumni luncheon Saturday. The winner of this year’s award, Dr. Gene Armstrong, was also the guest speaker at the luncheon.
It would be difficult to find anyone who has had a more positive influence on more young lives than Gene Armstrong.
