Put Me In Coach: Lance Armstrong a victim of his own success

For as long as many of us can remember, Lance Armstrong has dedicated his mind, body and soul to the sport of cycling and not much else.
His Livestrong Foundation, which can be advertised in pretty much every way imaginable has raised over $400 million dollars toward cancer research since its innagural year of 1997.
In the wake of another set of steriod accusations, Armstrong has decided not to fight it any longer
He has been banned from the sport that has literally been his life. Armstrong has also been stripped of his seven Tour De France titles.

Broken Bow golf starts off season at Ainsworth, Minden

The Broken Bow girls golf team opened its season with the Ainsworth Invitational Aug. 23. Junior Kaleigh Page had the lowest score for Broken Bow, finishing 6th overall with a 106.

Broken Bow Athletic Booster Club Scholarship Tailgate Party

The Broken Bow Athletic Booster Club will be hosting their Scholarship tailgate party Friday, Aug. 31 at 5:00 pm. This is before the first football game of the season against Ogallala. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw, chips, cookies, iced tea and Kool Aid. The charge for adults will be $7.00, $5,00 for students and $2.00 for children age five and under.

ALERT: BBPD investigates local scam

Broken Bow Police Department alerts Broken Bow and Custer County residents of a possible theft operation, involving a group of magazine salespersons going door-to-door in this area.
Chief Steve Scott said these salespersons are asking to come into the homes and use the restroom, then they are possibly going through the medicine cabinets to steal prescription drugs.
The Broken Bow Police Department had two complaints yesterday from residents reporting the above suspicious activity within Broken Bow and in Gothenburg.

NEWS UPDATE: Papers signed in Callaway to save nursing home

NEWS UPDATE: As of 12:30 p.m. approximately two-thirds of the necessary funds had been raised. As of 2;30 p.m. an agreement with the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samritan Society to acquire the rest home's operation had been signed. See this week's Custer County Chief for more on the story.

CALLAWAY RALLIES TO SAVE NURSING HOME

Callaway, Nebraska, is all about community. Monday night, an estimated 200-250 people, nearly half of the population 539 community, packed the bleachers at the Community Center to discuss the fate of the Callaway Good Life Center Nursing Home.

Russell Title and Escrow set to have new owner

Russell Title and Escrow in Broken Bow is on the move. After 32 years in the Abstract and Title business, Carla Allen is selling the business and moving into retirement.

She is pleased with the decision and is looking forward to ‘actually having time’ to attend her grandchildren’s activities, spend time at Plum Creek Canyon, and to winter in Florida.

Most trails re-open at Bessey Ranger District before Labor Day

Halsey – Most of the roads and trails at Bessey Ranger District near Halsey will re-open next week in time to welcome Labor Day weekend visitors. The roads and trails have been closed since early July due to hazard tree dangers and damage to the trails that occurred during the Camp 5 Fire earlier this summer.

State and local governments employ 16.4 million full-time equivalent employees in 2011

In March 2011, there were 16.4 million full-time equivalent employees working in state and local governments in the U.S., down 1.4 percent from 2010. According to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau, the majority of these employees (8.9 million) worked in education, followed by those working in hospitals (964,381), police protection (923,951) and corrections (717,940).

Girl Scout signups Monday

The Broken Bow Girl Scouts will be having a Girl Scout sign up at Tomahawk Park Monday, August 27th, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. for any girls interested in signing up for Girl Scouts. They will meet some of the existing girl scouts and join them for ice cream. If they would like to join GS but are unable to be at the sign up event please call Kay Richardson, Girl Scout Membership Specialist at 800-879-6123.

The Broken Bow Girl Scouts are pictured at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo, where they spent the night under the aquarium Aug. 18. A total of 43 girl Scouts and leaders attended the event.
