SORC brings muscle power to the Sandhills

ARNOLD--The Sandhills Open Road Challenge brought plenty of muscle power and speed to the Custer County area this past weekend. A new event called the Loup 2 Loup race, where drivers raced from Halsey to Purdum and back was added this year.
A half mile and one-mile shootout took place on Friday and the races continued on Saturday.
The results, starting with the Loup to Loup are as follows:

1. Thomas Tisthammer/Grant Barclay- 1966 Porsche (Colorado)
2. Nick Eckberg/ Kyle Eckberg- 1965 Corvette- Wakefield

New grain loading station hosts tours, safety demonstration

In November 2011, The Andersons formally broke ground on a 3.8 million bushel capacity grain elevator east of Anselmo. At that time it was planned for the elevator to be operational in time for the 2012 harvest season, and that plan has been accomplished.
Two events are coming up that offer an opportunity to visit the facility and meet the people who now call central Nebraska home.

Runza gives to baseball program - in Chad's name

Ten weeks after a horrific car accident sent him to the hospital, fighting for his life, Broken Bow teen Chad Christensen returned home Aug. 10. In celebration of his homecoming, Runza Restaurant in Broken Bow offered to donate 100 percent of its ice cream sales for the day to the Senior Legion baseball program, in Chad's name. Thursday, restaurant owners Kevin and Joyce Richardson presented checks totaling more than $1,100 to Mike Evans of Broken Bow's Diamond Youth Organization (DYO) to be used for the baseball program.

County sees increase in adults with degrees

Custer County has experienced a brain gain in the last 40 years, joining the rest of the country in what has been a massive increase in the number of adults who have earned college degrees.
In 1970, 5.5 percent of those over 25 years of age had college degrees in Custer County. By 2010, 18 percent of adults here had completed college.
The percentage of adults with college degrees in Custer County was less than the national average of 27.9 percent in 2010. The college-educated rate here was less than the Nebraska average of 27.7 percent.

Fred Werner, 83

August 17, 2012

Fred Werner, age 83, of Broken Bow, died August 14, 2012 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Anselm's Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Fred and Alice Werner family scholarship fund at the Custer County Foundation in Broken Bow or St. Anselm's Catholic Cemetery preservation fund. Christian Wake Service will be Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow

Mallory Grace Govier

August 15, 2012

Mallory Grace Govier entered the world July 8, 2012, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow. Proud parents are Logan and Becky Govier, and Mallory joins sibling Mason at home.
Mallory weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces and was 19.5 inches long at birth.
Grandparents are Rod and Grace Epping of Funk, and Frank and Deb Govier of Broken Bow.
Great-grandparents are Glen and Francis Govier of Broken Bow, and Catherine Joy Criddle of Bedford, England.

Alyssia Jones & Matthew Roberts

William and Rhonda Jones of Kirwin, Kan., proudly announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Alyssia Renee to Matthew Thomas Roberts, son of Tom and Sharon Roberts of Ansley.
The future bride is a 2006 graduate of Agra-Eastern Heights High School and graduated from UNK with a degree in business administration. She is currently employed at McMeen Physical Therapy as billing team leader.

Michael Clay and Ashley Spencer would like to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage.
Michael is the son of Gary and Lois of Broken Bow. Ashley is the daughter of Michael of Lincoln, and Donna of Sargent.
Grandparents of the future groom are Clyde and Pearl Loy, Joy Noel and the late Jumbo Clay.
The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Margaret and the late Don Davis, and the late Don and Doris Spencer.
The couple will exchange vows at Clyde Loy’s farm outside of Berwyn, Sept. 15, 2012.
Following their wedding the couple will reside in Broken Bow.

Stanley Nordlund, 85

Stanley John Nordlund, age 85,of Loup City, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the Baptist Church in Loup City, with the Rev. Del Unruh officiating. Burial will be in the Tallin Cemetery west of Callaway, Ne. at approximately 2 p.m. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 17, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow 8 a.m to 8 p.m. with family present 5 to 8 p.m Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Loup City or the Homeward Trail of Mason City, Ne.

Althea Lawrence, 90

August 15, 2012

Althea Lawrence, age 90 of Broken Bow, formerly of Ansley, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mary Jane Gockley officiating. Burial was in the Fort McPherson Cemetery.
