One of the first orders of business at the Sept. 24 Broken Bow City Council meeting was the swearing in of new council member, Kelly Clay. Clay was appointed by Mayor Cecil Burt to fulfill a term on the council vacated by Scott Spanel, serving the East Ward.
Spanel was serving as council president at the time he resigned, and Councilman Chad Schall was appointed to temporarily act as president until a full council was again established. At the Monday meeting, Schall was elected by the council to continue to serve as president.

SARGENT - - The campaign to encourage kids to enjoy a healthier lifestyle has been catching a lot of steam, especially since Michelle Obama has been in the White House. One area athletic team has climbed aboard the healthy awareness train, taking their healthy message to school children across the state.
The Tri-City Storm hockey team has just kicked off their fourth year of promoting healthy choices for kids, with their G.O.A.L. (Get Out And Live) Program. Storm players and Stormy the Mascot, along with team staff members, visit area schools to present the program.

MERNA -- Sandhills/Thedford went 1-1 in a triangular with Anselmo-Merna and Twin Loup Tuesday night.
They topped the host Coyotes 2-0 (25-10, 25-15). Kelsey Higgins and Chantelle Milleson powered the Knights offensively, recording four and three kills respectively. Madison Taylor and Avery Taylor finished with two each and Jacy Spencer and Taylor Marten had one.
Madison Taylor also had four blocks on the match.
Sarah Miles dug out 12 balls, but she had plenty of help in that department. Taylor Marten finished with six and Shaina Simonson had five while Higgins chipped in four.

Broken Bow Police Department’s investigation of possible shoplifting at a local business on Saturday, Sept. 22, led to the consent search of a Broken Bow residence and charges ranging from shoplifting to drug offenses, according to Chief Steve Scott.
Shane John Peck was born Nov. 5, 1970, at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha and went to be with the Lord Sept. 19, 2012, at the age of 41, at peace, and set free.
At a young age Shane trusted Christ as his Savior. He was active in his Sonlife youth group, and had fond memories of their mission trips.
Shane spent three years in Seattle and loved that area and in many ways called it home.
Shane loved kids and working in Bible school.
Nancy Vohland, age 74 of Broken Bow, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at her home in Broken Bow.
A memorial service for Nancy will be Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Sharon Ruzicka officiating. A registry book may be signed at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
Nancy Lee Vohland was born Dec. 19, 1937, to CA and Doris (Traphagan) Owen. Nancy grew up in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1955. She attended Hastings College.
Callie L. McClendon, 85 years of age, of rural Elwood, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
Callie was born Aug. 25, 1927, in Oconto, the eldest of six children born to Henry Raymond and Helen Elizabeth “Nellie†(Newhouse) Martin. She received her education at Callaway, graduating from Callaway High School with the class of 1945.
In 1952, Callie moved to Indiana. She was employed by Metro Glass for more than 20 years.
September 18, 2012, Dean (Bud) E Wood mounted his horse one last time and rode off into greener pastures.
Bud rode into this life May 7, 1931, in Custer County. Born to Ruth E (Summers) and Leo R Wood, he spent his childhood on the family ranch north of Sumner Ne attending grade school at Mt Olive as it was then known. He and his sister Dona spent many happy hours horseback on the lower meadow. As the 3rd generation to reside on the home place he quickly developed a life long love for the land and the cattle they raised on it.

LINCOLN -- The Foster Care Review Office is looking to turn its focus back to the children it serves after six child welfare laws were passed last spring, changing Nebraska's child welfare system.
Sen. Bob Krist of Omaha paid a visit during the foster care advisory committee’s meeting Sept. 19. He said internal problems with the committee took precedence over the needs of the children before the last legislative session.
September 24th
A former Broken Bow man has died after being hit by a train Sept. 19, in Grand Island.
Shane Peck, age 41 of Grand Island, formerly of Broken Bow, was pronounced dead at the scene, after the Grand Island Police Department were called to the Broadwell Street crossing at 5:17 p.m.
Peck was a 1989 graduate of Broken Bow High School.
