New pool on track

As the community looks to warmer weather and impending Spring, thoughts turn to summer and ultimately to the opportunity to swim. This year is no different except that the new swim season will bring with it the opening of the new Broken Bow Aquatic Center. The new pool is pictured above. Over the winter months, the public has watched the facility being built piece by piece, and now the completion of the project is in sight. This facility will boast a completely new design which includes a zero depth entry and multiple play features.

Women called to ministry as second career

The stories are similar for two Broken Bow women - they were well past 50 when they felt a calling on their lives to change directions and pursue a new career. Both listened.
Mary Jane Gockley moved with her husband to Broken Bow in 1978. Her husband had accepted a position as priest at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
A registered nurse by trade, Gockley went to work at Jennie Melham Medical Center, where she remained until her retirement in 1991. She also stayed very busy as a clergy wife and a mom to four daughters.

Adrian Matthias Fama

Alvin and Rachel Fama are proud to announce the birth of their son, Adrian Matthias Fama, born Jan. 23, 2012 at 4:35 p.m. He weighed 7 pounds 2 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. His two older sisters, AnnaBeth and Julia, were excited to finally welcome him home. Grandparents are Felix, Jr. and Corazon Fama of the Philippines, and David and Debi White of Sargent.

Lyndsey Leigh Foster and Travis Scott Porter were united in marriage, Aug. 13, 2011, at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo, with Father Jim Hunt officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Julie Foster of Broken Bow, and the late Kevin Foster, and the granddaughter of Kaye Carr, Springview.
The groom is the son of Mark and Carole Porter of Merna, and the grandson of Dorothy Porter, Broken Bow.

Mr. & Mrs. Preston Foster

Tara Marie Weaver and Preston Jerod Foster were married, July 9, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in North Platte. Dr. Douglas Delp officiated the wedding ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Jack and Theresa Weaver of North Platte. The groom is the son of Julie Foster, Broken Bow, and the late Kevin Foster. The bride's grandparents include Dean and Helen Weaver of Stamford, and Mary Dow of North Platte. Kaye Carr, Springview, is the grandmother of the groom.

Mae McDonald, 72

Mae LaVonne and her twin, Kay Lorene, were born Jan. 22, 1940, to Edgar and A. Doris Slingsby in a little house near Westerville. In the fall of that year, the family moved to California and returned back to Nebraska when Mae was five.
She attended grade school at the Knight country school outside of Westerville. She spent her first two high school years in Ansley where she was a cheerleader and the last two years in Arcadia where she was a band majorette. This is where she met her future husband Joe McDonald. To this union four children were born: Tammy, Michael, Douglas and Laurie.

Ruth Bolen, 88

Ruth Marie (Bowley) Bolen departed from this earth, her family and friends to join the Lord, her husband, John L. Bolen, (Aug. 11, 2003), son, Charles, a great-great grandson, parents John and Myrtle (Amsberry) Bowley, sisters Florence (Morgan), Sarah (Dutton), LaVonne, Ruby (Chrisp), and Katherine (Geiser).

Forest "Jim" Fagan, 84

Forest C. "Jim" Fagan, 84, of Anselmo, passed away Feb. 18, 2012 at Callaway.
Jim was born October 1, 1927, in Denver, Colo., to Ellen (Teahon) and John Fagan. He attended rural schools in the Anselmo area and in 1945 he graduated from Anselmo High school. After high school, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Shirley June Rama was born June 6, 1922, in Merna, to Clarence Eugene Rama and Wilma Loy (Taylor) Rama. She attended country school and graduated from Merna High School in 1939.

Arvid Smith, 86

Arvid William Smith, age 86 of Thedford, died Feb. !4, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be Monday Feb. 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Bethel Assembly of God Church with Pastor Ron Master officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery with full Military Honors by American Legion 230 and Thedford VFW 2023. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 PM at the church. Memorials are suggested to Hillcrest Cemetery Fund or the donor’s choice.

The Broken Bow Homecoming parade will start at 1:45 at the school and proceed south on 9th street....
