MERNA -- Authorities aren’t exactly for sure what caused the head-on collision on State Highway 2 south of Merna Tuesday morning.
Ambulances and rescue crews from Merna and Broken Bow responded to the 8 a.m. call and the drivers of each vehicle were transported from the scene. Life Flight was called back due to the weather.
The Sandhills/Thedford boys basketball team and Mullen girls basketball team became Sandhills Conference Champions Friday night with ST edging Mullen in the boys contest 44-41 while Mullen took out Brady 50-31.
Mullen and Sandhills/Thedford both saw their boys teams advance to the Sandhills Conference Tournament final with a 58-34 victory over SMC and a 62-37 win over Brady respectively. The Knights will play the Broncos Friday night at 6:30.

Michele Staggs is the owner and operator of Simply Sweet. She and her husband, Ed, moved to Broken Bow in July 2012, living the previous two years in Denver.
The search for a new Broken Bow senior high/junior high principal is over. After narrowing down a field of nearly 30 applicants, a contract has been offered and accepted by Rusty Kluender.
Kluender (who will quickly tell you his name rhymes with blender) accepted the offer to become the 7-12 principal at Broken Bow last Wednesday. He will officially begin his duties here Aug. 1, 2013.
Glenn L. Rohde, 79, life-long resident of Eddyville and Sumner, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Callaway Good Life Center.
He was born March 9, 1933, the fifth child and third son of Ronald and Mayme (Anderson) Rohde in Eddyville. He graduated from Eddyville High School with the class of 1951, and went on to further his education at Kearney State Teacher’s College, graduating in 1955.
Glenn was a 4-year letterman in football and track.
Evelyn Margaret (Smith) Fowler was born Sept. 6, 1917, near Nesbit, which was about nine miles west of Stapleton. She left the loving care at Rose Lane Home in Loup City, and departed this life Jan. 15, 2013, at 7:40 p.m. At that same moment she was welcomed by her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ into her new and eternal home.
She was greeted by her husband, John Mervin; her father and mother, Harry "Bud", Smith, Beatrice "Birdie" Echo (Heldenbrand) Smith; sister, Vera June (Smith) Miller; little brother, Charles Oscar Smith and a host of family and friends.
LINCOLN – A lively discussion over gun and ammunition control legislation took place during a Judiciary Committee hearing of the Nebraska Legislature on Jan 23.
 Among the bills discussed was LB50, introduced by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha. The bill would hold gun owners civilly liable for damages resulting from the unreasonable placement of a firearm where a minor or mentally handicapped individual could get it.
