Jacki Kay Giles, daughter of Rich and Kristi Giles of Halsey, and Kevin Andrew Shelbourn, son of Jerry and Lori Shelbourn of Valentine, would like to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. The bride-to-be is a 2009 graduate of Sandhills High School and will graduate this spring from Hastings College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and human resource management.
The perspective groom is a 2006 graduate of Valentine Rural High School and is currently employed by O’Kief Brothers of Wood Lake.
The couple is planning a June 1, 2013 wedding.

Jamie Ost and Nathan Rooney are pleased to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Darwin Ost of Fredonia, N.D. and Elaine Ost of Kulm, N.D. She is the granddaughter of the late Art and Pauline Ost of Kulm, N.D. and Lillian Roth and the late Jack Roth of Boise, Idaho.
The bride-elect is a 2007 graduate of Kulm High School in Kulm, N.D., and a May 2012 graduate of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Megan Carr & Kevin Beres

Megan Carr and Kevin Beres, both of Kansas City, are planning an April 27, 2013, wedding at Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City. Parents of the couple are Dixie Carr and Marvin Carr, both of Kearney, and John and Karen Beres of Milwaukee. Megan’s grandparents are Norland and Dorothy Carr of Broken Bow.
The future bride graduated from Kearney High School in 2005, and from UNK in 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial distribution. She currently works as a sales engineer at Eaton Corp. in Kansas City.

Sydnee Owens, 14

Sydnee Faith Owens, 14 of Aurora, went to her eternal home Nov. 30, 2012, after a courageous 6 1/2-year battle with cancer. A Celebration of Life was Dec. 4 at the Monroe E-Free Church near Phillips. Family and friends were encouraged to wear pink in honor of Sydnee’s favorite color. Rev. Marshall Erickson officiated. Interment was at the Aurora Cemetery.

Katherine Drake, 74

Katherine L. Drake, 74 of Kearney, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
A memorials service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney with the Rev. Stan Murdoch officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Heartland Hematology and Oncology. Online condolences or personal reflections may be submitted at www.osrfh.com. O'Brien - Straatmann - Redinger Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Is everyone really living longer?

People are living longer. Or are they? That's an important question as policymakers debate whether to raise the eligibility age from 65 to 67 for receiving Medicare benefits. Those supporting the change argue that the age for receiving full Social Security benefits is already 67 for those born after 1959, so why not do the same for Medicare? People are living longer anyway, and besides, the shift would save Medicare billions of dollars.

Litchfield teen battles rare disease

LITCHFIELD - - No one ever expects to get the news that they have a rare, and very dangerous disease. Tyler Snow is just like anybody else, never thinking that sort of thing would happen to him. He was wrong.
Now the battle is on, and Tyler’s friends and family are pitching in to help by hosting a special fundraising event Wednesday, Jan. 9. The event will include a bake sale and nachos - and an opportunity to make donations - and will run from noon to 6 p.m. at the Litchfield High School new gym on main street in Litchfield.

Broken Bow Elks Lodge to host Local Hoop Shoot

The Broken Bow Elks Lodge is sponsoring the local Hoop Shoot Jan. 5. It will be held in the activities building for ages 8-13.

Age Groups:

8-9 year olds 8:30-9:00 am compete at 9 am
10-11 year olds 9:15- 9:45 am compete at 9:45 am
12-13 year olds 10:00-10:30 am compete at 10:30

Fast Facts:

-The Elks Lodge National Hoop Shoot is a free throw contest for youth ages 8-13.
-More than 2.5 million youth participate each year
-Beginning at local Elks Lodges, contestants advance through local, district, state, regional and national competitions
