Christmas Tree Cutting Permits Go On Sale Monday

November 22, 2013

Christmas tree cutting permits will go on sale beginning Monday, November 25 at both the Pine Ridge and Bessey Ranger Districts. The permits entitle the purchaser to harvest one ponderosa pine or eastern red cedar, up to 15 feet tall from selected areas in the Nebraska National Forest near Chadron and Halsey.

The permits cost $10.00 and are available at the following offices Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:

* Pine Ridge Office - 16524 Hwy. 385, approximately 3 miles south of Chadron
* Supervisor's Office - 125 N. Main Street in Chadron

Give a smile to a needy child this Christmas!

This week is collection week for Operation Christmas Child, and the shoe boxes have been rolling in! The Wescott Baptist Church in Comstock delivered 349 shoe boxes to the collection site, First Christian Church in Broken Bow, Monday evening. Delivering the boxes on behalf of the Comstock church were: front row, from left, Joshua and David Lewis; back row, Julie Dockhorn, Sue Schauda, Sarah Lewis and Miriam Lewis. The collection schedule for the remainder of the week is as follows:
Nov. 21 Thursday 3 - 5 p.m.
Nov. 22 Friday 6 - 7:30 p.m.

GOP announces debate in Broken Bow

The Nebraska Republican Party has announced a series of six debates between now and the May 13, 2014, primary, including one in Broken Bow. There will be three debates for the Republican candidates for Governor and three for the Republican US Senate candidates. In addition, there will be one debate for each office in each of the three Congressional Districts.

Cemetery tales entertain, educate

It is written that the winds that whisper across the Great Plains tell the stories of our ancestors. For Bev Kennedy, the whispers of stories about those lost in the early days of Custer County, moved to paper as she set out on a great voyage several years ago. Inspired by local folklore, a simple map and a personal challenge, she set out to document the locations of each and every registered cemetery in Custer County.

Bryn Lee & Maci Jo Watkins

Proud grandmother Donna Winbolt of Broken Bow would like to announce the birth of her twin granddaughters, Bryn Lee and Maci Jo Watkins. Bryn weighed 4 pounds 14 ounces and was 18 inches long at birth, while Maci weighed 4 pounds 8 ounces and was 18.5 inches long. Proud parents of the twin girls are Jacquie Winbolt Watkins and Bret Watkins of Lincoln. The girls are also welcomed by grandparents Larry and Sandy Watkins of Lincoln, and are welcomed home by Bosco and Bella.

Ashley and Kyle Wolfe, of Casper Wyo., would like to introduce Ryker Daniel, born Oct. 20, 2013, weighing 6 pounds 15 ounces and measuring 21 inches long. His grandparents are Traci and Brad Parr of Sutton, Steph and Dave Anderson of Broken Bow, Lori Wolfe of Ravenna, and Russ and Kelly Wolfe of Kearney. Great-grandparents are Laura and Bill Mannel of Anselmo, Sandy and Don Anderson of Broken Bow, Bob and Vernetta Svanda of Ravenna and Dan and Shirley Wolfe of Lexington.

James T. Clay, 63

James Thomas Clay was born Feb. 10, 1950, in Broken Bow. He passed away Nov. 7, 2013, in Lincoln in Bryan Hospital.
Jim is survived by sisters, Jean Anderson and husband Dillard of North Platte, Liz Baker of Kenosha, Wisc., and Dawn Johnson of Merna; brothers, Lawrence Clay and wife Judy of Horton, Kan., and Roger Clay of Merna; plus nieces, nephews and a host of Clay and Christensen relatives.

Tragedy strikes, but dream lives on

SARGENT - - Though he never served in the military himself, Dennis Seidel had the utmost respect and admiration for members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and was determined to honor those veterans in a special way in his hometown of Sargent. But he was not able to see that happen.
After his sudden, tragic death in February 2013, friends and loved ones of Dennis Seidel - in particular his girlfriend, Kathy Wilson - have made it their mission to complete the project Dennis was so passionately devoted to for the last years of his life; the Sargent Veterans Memorial.
