Dennis Andrew Seidel, 55, of Sargent, died Feb. 24, 2013, at the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow, as the result of a tractor accident.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Sargent Public School in Sargent. Burial will be in the Somerford Cemetery near Sargent with Pastor Alan Petersen officiating. A memorial visitation will be from 5 â 7 p.m. Thursday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sargent Veteranâs Memorial.

Sandhills/Thedford and Anselmo-Merna both advanced to their district finals with wins over Mullen and Bertrand respectively. Sandhills/Thedford won 48-36 and Anselmo-Merna won 60-55. Sandhills/Thedford will play Leyton Tuesday night at Sutherland (7 pm) Tuesday while Anselmo-Merna will play Wauneta-Palisade at Hershey with the game slated to start at 7:30 pm Tuesday. The Sandhills/Thedford girls will play 9 am Wednesday against Falls City/Sacred Heart in their opening round state tournament game.

Sandhills/Thedford will advance to the state tournament with a 55-51 win over Sioux County Friday night. Ansley-Litchfield saw their season come to an end Friday night with a 55-31 loss to St. Mary's of O'Neill. Mullen, who had a chance at a wildcard, saw those hopes fade as they didn't get enough outside help.

The BNSF railroad crossings at Anselmo are scheduled for discussion and possible decision at this Tuesday's Custer County Board of Supervisor's meeting. The meeting starts at 9 a.m., in the basement of the Custer County Courthouse, with a report from the Zoning Commissioner at 9:30 a.m.; public hearings on the possible vacation of county roads 591, 222 and 2070 up for discussion at 10:10 a.m.; followed by discussions on a road maintenance agreement and the BNSF railroad crossing at 10:45 a.m. Sealed bids will be opened for a 14-yeard dump truck and 11:30 a.m.
The entire state of Nebraska was braced for an intense winter storm Thursday and Friday, and the system dubbed "Storm Q" lived up to its hype. According to the National Weather Service office in North Platte, Broken Bow received 8 inches of snow from Wednesday evening to Friday morning.
The heavy snow made travel difficult, as this trucker can attest! He got stuck while attempting to make a right turn, backing up traffic for two blocks. The truck was stuck for approximately 20 minutes before finally getting out and back on his way.
Fast action by Dave Mattox probably saved the building, but not before serious damage impacted the contents at a fire Friday morning, just off Weissert Road at Max Mattox's.
"Dave was there when it broke out and tried to knock it down," said Broken Bow Fire Chief Kem Oatman, "He was on the scene so he reported it quickly and that really helped."

The following information is a press release issued by the Nebraska State Patrol.
(Lincoln, Neb.)- A two vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Hamilton County has claimed the life of a 19-year old Callaway woman.
The crash occurred just before 4:30 p.m., Wednesday February 20, on westbound Interstate-80 near the Giltner exit. The Nebraska State Patrol says a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer was eastbound on I-80 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV crossed the median and struck a 2000 Saturn. Both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch.

With the winter storm conditions, some of the basketball contests have been moved. Sandhills/Thedford and Mullen boys will now play for the subdistrict title Saturday at North Platte St. Pats at 4 pm. Anselmo-Merna boys subdistrict final against Bertrand has been moved to Saturday at 5 p.m. at Gothenburg. As of right now the Sandhills/Thedford vs. Sioux County girls basketball district title is still scheduled for Feb. 22 in Hemingford at 6:30 pm mountain time.
HALSEY - - The students at Sandhills Elementary School participated in the âOne School, One Bookâ program during the month of January, reading the book "Brighty of the Grand Canyon" by Marguerite Henry.
Consolidated Telephone Company donated the money so that each family represented by students at the school could have a copy of this book to read at home according to a prearranged reading schedule.

The Broken Bow Lions have a common goal, to help their fellow man. These Knights of the Blind do more than help those who want to see, their charitable work here locally extends to those in need, with special emphasis on our children.
Don Wolford says the reason for his involvement is easy ... âyou enjoy helping people. Thatâs what weâre there for.â
The local organization has donated to the Childrenâs Christmas fund through their âRent a Santaâ program, and just last week raised over $1,100 for the local food pantry by sponsoring the Bliz and Glitz evening at the Municipal Building.
