Senators debate state aid to schools

LINCOLN - A bill that would change the formula for state aid to schools pitted senators representing smaller, mostly rural school districts against those representing larger districts.
Lawmakers began debate Monday on LB 407, introduced by Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids.

The bill would slow the growth rate of state aid to schools to 6.3 percent for the upcoming school year, down from the current projected rate of 10.3 percent. The following year the growth rate would slow further to 5.1 percent.

Stoltenberg named Postmaster of the Year

Michele Stoltenberg, Postmaster of Sargent 68874, was awarded the Nebraska Branch of the National LEAGUE of Postmasters, Postmaster of the Year award Monday, April 15, at their annual state convention in Grand Island. She has been Postmaster in Sargent since July 23, 2005, when she was appointed to the position. Competition on the National level will be held in San Diego, Calif., July 21 – 25, 2013, during the national convention.

Weather moves more spring sports events

Weather has caused more spring sports events to be cancelled. The Sutherland Track (Mullen, Anselmo-Merna) Invite has been cancelled for today. There will be no makeup date.

The Central Nebraska Track Classic at Grand Island Northwest has been moved to Wednesday with throwing events starting at 4 p.m.

The Broken Bow golf trip to Scottsbluff has been postponed to Tuesday May 7. The Broken Bow Golf Meet at Holdrege scheduled for tomorrow is also cancelled.

Also, The Sandhills/Thedford golf meet has been moved to Wednesday April 24 at Thedford starting at 10 am.

Loma Ballenger, 89

April 18, 2013

Loma J. Ballenger, 89, of Callaway, formerly of Lexington, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Callaway Good Life Center.
She was born June 10, 1923, in Callaway, to William J. and Etta May (Weaver) Longmore. Loma attended Hillside rural school near Callaway.
She was united in marriage to Carl W. Ballenger June 29, 1946, in Callaway. Seven children were blessed to this marriage; twin sons, David and Dale, Dorothy, Darla, Dea and Daryl.

Melva Warren, 88

April 18, 2013

Just before dawn April 6, 2013, Melva Jean Warren left this earth for her heavenly home. She was born July 10, 1924, in her grandparent’s home in Republic County Kansas to Marshall Allen and Sylva May Beecher, the oldest of three children.
She rode a horse seven miles to District 9 Republic County Country School through 6th grade, and later drove a horse and buggy. She started her high school years at Chester High School and graduated from Belleville High School in 1942.

Doris Roberts, 92

April 18, 2013

Doris A. Roberts, 92, of Sargent, passed away April 11, 2013, at the Callaway Good Life Center in Callaway.
Funeral services were April 15, 2013, at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent, with Pastor Marty Robbins officiating. Burial took place in the New Helena Cemetery.
Doris Arlene Roberts was born Jan. 29, 1921, at Merna, to Wallace and Iona (Lange) Blakeman. Doris was the third child born to this union. She graduated from Merna High School in 1941.
Doris married E. A. (Jap) Roberts Oct. 17, 1941. To this union two sons were born; Wallace (Wally) and Leslie (Shorty) Roberts.

The face of Rett Syndrome

Every day, 3-year-old Morgan Kaelin’s life consists of some form of therapy, lots of medications and feedings through a tube in her stomach. Oh - and watching her favorite show, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, on TV.
For the many things in her world that are so out of the ordinary for such a young child, things like getting excited when your favorite cartoon comes on make Morgan seem so . . . ordinary. But her life is anything but ordinary.

Board split on adding new teacher

Classroom size - How many students are too many for the most optimal learning environment? That was a key issue of discussion at last week’s special meeting of the Broken Bow Board of Education.
The discussion ensued when a number of parents of next year’s 5th graders addressed the board about adding another 5th grade teacher to the elementary staff. The current 4th grade class has 72 students, meaning that with the current three sections of 5th grade there would be 24 students in each section.

- Field events will start at 12:00 pm and running events 1pm.

- All running events will be finals against time and field events will be finals only with 3 trials.

Gothenburg Swedes Golf Invite = moved to Thursday, April 25th at 9:00.
