Glenn Alspaugh, 80

June 27, 2013

Word has been received of the death of Glenn Alspaugh, age 80 of Montaque, Calif., formerly of Broken Bow. He is survived by his wife, Cindi and family of Oregon and Washington; brothers, Robert and Roger Alspaugh of Broken Bow; and sisters, Jean Pomplun of Broken Bow and Shirley Lange of Minnesota. Memorial services will be at a later date.

ATV fatality northwest of Broken Bow

Broken Bow and Merna rescue personnel were called to the scene of an ATV accident at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday northwest of Broken Bow, where they found Jack Horner pinned beneath his ATV. Horner, 64 of Broken Bow, died as a result of his injuries.

Horner had been spraying muskthistles in the pasture for his employer, Chuck Cole of Merna, at the time of the accident. The Custer County Sheriff's Office handled the investigation.

Horner leaves behind a wife, Ardith, and other family members. More details will be posted as they become available.

Shea shuts the door on Loup City for Bow juniors

Taylor Shea used a strong 6th and 7th inning to close out Loup City Saturday night as Broken Bow took the 5-3 victory.

Broken Bow trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the 6th inning when two costly Loup City errors allowed Broken Bow to take a 5-3 lead.

Shea then recorded strikeouts in four of the last six outs to help Bow secure the victory.

Travis Kleeb got the start on the mound and had a solid outing as well in his five innings of work. He struck out four while walking just one and allowed just two earned runs on five hits.

Spirit 18u victorious over Arcadia

June 23, 2013

The Broken Bow Spirit 18u totaled 13 RBIs in a 17-5 victory over Arcadia Friday night. Lizzie Griffith connected for three singles in all three of her plate appearances and finished the game with one RBI while Kelsie Myers hit a double in her one official plate appearance while walking twice. She finished with two RBI's on the night.

Tressa Ripp finished with two singles while Kassie Russell finished with one and they combined for three RBIs from the the top of the order.

Custer County braces for more wind

Central Nebraska has been asked to brace for more weather Saturday evening. A weather warning from the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m., and followed a few minutes later with a tornado watch for all of Custer County into 1 a.m. Residents are asked to be alert and take cover.

The severe storm that rolled through the county Friday evening downed trees, took off roofs, overturned pivots. Residents were out Saturday morning chain saws in hand. Turn to this week’s Custer County Chief for a tour in pictures of the damage.

Red Cross offers free training classes

The American Red Cross will be hosting a free training for those interested in learning about how they can help the Red Cross respond to disasters. Trained volunteers are needed to help respond in a variety of ways after a disaster has affected a community. The Disaster Services: An Overview course introduces these different activities to interested community members and prospective volunteers. 


Colin John Rapp

Jeff and Heather (Sonnichsen) Rapp, of Hickman, would like to announce the arrival of their son, Colin John Rapp, born April 18. Colin weighed in at 9 pounds 8 ounces and was 20 3/4 inches long. Colin is welcomed home by big sister, Keely Jo. Grandparents are Kevin and Jeanne Rapp of Ansley and Rod and Deb Sonnichsen of Broken Bow. Great-grandparents are Johnny and Loris Wright of Broken Bow and Jean Bargman of Bloomfield.

Kaden Lee Miller

Levi and Kiley Miller of Bennet are proud to announce the birth of a son, Kaden Lee Miller, born April 12, 2013, at Bryan Health Medical Center in Lincoln. Kaden weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches in length. Proud grandparents are Tom and Sharon Roberts, and Ron and Deb Miller. Great-grandparents are Maude Roberts, Norman and Doris Hartman, and Marion and Elaine Olson. Kaden is also welcomed home by the family puppy, Lexi.

Leann Brouillete & Ryan McFarland

Leann Brouillette and Ryan McFarland are happy to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage.
Leann is the daughter of Dawn Hiatt and Ron Glasscock of Callaway and the late Gregory Brouillette. She is currently going to the University of Nebraska at Kearney and will graduate in May 2014 with Special Ed and Elementary Ed degrees.
Ryan is the son of Stan and Lawana McFarland of Eddyville. He graduated from UNL in 2010 with a Diversified Ag/Animal Science degree and is currently farming with his dad in Eddyville.
