Antique tractor ride today in Bow

The first, hopefully to be annual antique tractor ride launched from the Custer County Fairgrounds this morning for a 50-mile scenic trek through the hills surrounding Broken Bow. With an estimated max speed of 12 miles per hour, the 30+ tractors should arrive back in Broken Bow and be at the square around 4 p.m. this afternoon and everyone is invited to greet them as they return.

Jenkins shares ‘Tali Tali Time’

For most young college graduates, the idea of cutting off your hair and living in a mud hut might not be very appealing. But that is exactly what Whitney Jenkins, of Callaway, wanted.
Whitney became a Peace Corps volunteer in 2011, and in August that year left for Senegal. A 2007 graduate of Callaway High School, Whitney is the daughter of Jim and Julianna Jenkins of Callaway. She credits her small-town roots and upraising on a cattle ranch for getting her where she is today.

Katie Thomsen & Nicholas Rush

Mike and Justine Thomsen of North Platte, and Terry and Colleen Rush of Merna, proudly announce the engagment and approaching marriage of their children, Katie Anne Thomsen and Nicholas Alan Rush.
The bride-elect is a graduate of North Platte St. Patrick’s High School, and the University of Nebraska-Kearney where she earned a bachelor in arts & education in English and Healthy and PE. She is currently employed as English/PE teacher at Broken Bow Public Schools.

Brynley Dawn Stunkel

Jade and Michelle Stunkel of Ord, are pleased to introduce their daughter, Brynley Dawn, born May 1, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Brynley weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and was 20 inches long. She joins at home 3-year-old brother, Barron. Grandparents are Harold and Virginia Boyce of Ord, Cy and Marilyn Thoene of Ansley, and Doug Stunkel and Marcy Dudek of Ansley.

Molly Spanel & Spencer Eilenstine

Bruce and Polly Spanel of Anselmo, are proud to announce the engagment of their daughter, Molly Jo Spanel, to Spencer Mark Eilenstine, son of Mark and Chris Eilenstine of Boelus. Molly is a 2006 graduate of Anselmo-Merna High Shcool. She received her cosmetology license from Joseph’s College of Beauty in Kearney. She currently owns and operates her own salon in Boelus.

Louie Ropers, 78

Louie John Ropers, age 78, of Sargent, passed away June 22, 2013, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Louie was born July 7, 1934, to John and Elsie (Schwarz) Ropers in Hamil, S.D. His family moved to the Oconto area when he was nine. Louie went to Country School in Oconto and graduated from Lexington High School in 1952.
He married Delores Hinrichsen Sept. 22, 1957 in Lexington, and they started their lives together in Broken Bow. They moved to
Sargent in 1962, where he started his own business, Louie's Body Shop.

Mary Walker, 80

Mary Antonia Seda Walker, 80, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at
Heritage Hall in Broken Bow. She was born Jan. 25, 1933, to Stanley and Mary (Jenasofsky) Seda in
Arnold on a farm in Mills Valley. She attended Mills Valley Grade School
and later Arnold High School. After high school she helped Paul and
Marjorie Weinman when the twins, Jim and Jean, were born.
December 8, 1954, Mary married Norman E. Walker in Cozad. To this union three children were born: Bennie Lynn, Dale Eugene and Norma Jane.

Elton Painter, 77

Elton Kem Painter, 77 years of age, was born Dec. 29, 1935, to Earl and Alta (Horton) Painter at Springview, and died at the Ainsworth Care Center at Ainsworth June 15, 2013, where he had resided for several years. Elton was the seventh of eight children.
Elton grew up surrounded by family on the Painter ranch southwest of Springview. Besides working on the ranch, he also was employed by several road construction companies in his early years.

Carol Wilcox Stiff, 73

Carol Wilcox Stiff, 73, of Idaho Springs, died March 20 at her home from acute heart failure. She was born Carol Ann Wilcox June 9, 1939, in Omaha, the daughter of Dr. Clyde William and Ethelyn Verna (Ellis) Wilcox.
