Jane Fieldgrove, 63

August 26, 2013

Jane E. Fieldgrove, 63, of Loup City died Thurs-day, Aug. 15, 2013 at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Memorial Services were Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at the Congregational Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Doug DeNeui officiating. Burial was be in Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna. Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna was in charge of arrangements.
Jane Fieldgrove was born Jan. 19, 1950, in Hinsdale, Ill., to Edwin and Dorothea (Klinkman) Olson. She moved to Nebraska in April 1965, from Downers Grove, Ill. She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1969.

Ena Glass, 94

August 26, 2013

Ena Margaret (Call) Glass died July 24, 2013, at Pioneer Memorial Rest Home in Mullen.
She was born Oct. 9, 1918, at Merna, to Charles Jefferson Call and Dorothy Ann (Kaminska). Ena and her family loved on different farms in the Merna and Broken Bow area and she went to country schools.

NSB donates bank building

Nebraska State Bank & Trust Company is donating the historical Mason City Banking Company building to the Village of Mason City. On August 15th, the Village officially took over the building and plan to relocate their city offices. The Board of Directors for Nebraska State Bank felt that it was an important building and historical marker for Mason City and should belong to the township. “It was the right thing to do” stated Paul Parliament, Chairman and CEO of the bank. “The board was pleased that the building would be utilized by the city and filled a need for its citizens.”

School's in session!

It is that time of year! Today marks the first day of school in Broken Bow, with most of the other area schools starting last week. This is a special first day for Broken Bow elementary students, who are entering the halls of either brand new or renovated classrooms at North Park. For those in the community who have pursued the dream of a new school for several years, this day was a long time coming

Council discusses infrastructure issues

August 19, 2013

One of several infrastructure items to come before the Broken Bow City Council last week involves the City Square. The city plans to replace all four sidewalks leading up to the bandstand, and Street Superintendent Monte Clark says his department plans to accomplish that yet this season.
There was also discussion on whether to leave the bricks in place between the curb and the sidewalk on the west, north and east sides of the square, or concrete all the way to the curb. Council President Chad Schall said he has heard from at least a half dozen residents who want the bricks left there.

Janine K. Golden, 59

August 16, 2013

Janine Kay Golden, 59 of Sugar Loaf, Calif., passed away Aug. 1, 2013, at her home.
She was the first child of Robert and Shirley Golden and born in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Jan. 20, 1954. She was baptized at the Berwyn Methodist Church.
She attended school in Broken Bow and Ogallala.
She married Carlos Echeverria Jan. 21, 1971. To this union two children were born; Michele (Dan) Myers and Cameron (Courtney) Echeverria.

Lila Taylor Picton, 72

Lila (Taylor) Jenkins Picton, age 72, of Ashland, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 after a battle with cancer at the Bryan LGH West Hospital in Lincoln.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been designated to the Lila Picton Memorial Fund.

Evelyn Cecil, 89

Evelyn Elaine Cecil, 89, of Arcadia, passed away Aug. 1, 2013, at her home.
Evelyn was born May 30, 1924, to James Fredrick Wilson and Maudia Lewellyn Spickelmier Wilson. She grew up on the family farm near Culbertson, and graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1942.
May 24, 1944, Evelyn married Howard William Cecil, and to this union a daughter, Deanna, was born.

Pat DeFrance, 61

We’re changed now. Not because she left us, but because she touched us.
Pat DeFrance passed away at her home in Jackson Aug. 6, 2013, after a long illness. She was 61.
Pat was born in a small town in Nebraska July 23, 1952, to Dale and Grace Andersen. She grew up in Broken Bow, and graduated from college in Kearney. She met Jerry DeFrance, and they married Aug. 26, 1978. They made their home near Jefferson, S.D., and both commuted to work in Sioux City, Iowa.

Isabel Edmisten, 94

Isabel Grace Edmisten, 94, of Lincoln, passed away Aug. 10, 2013. She was born in Ansley, to Charles A. and Alice (Butler) Chandler. She was a former school teacher and buyer for Miller and Paine.
Isabel is survived by a daughter, Ruth (Robert) Trobee of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Randall T. Trobee and Michael S. Trobee; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Ralph, and brother, Lloyd.
