Pat DeFrance, 61

We’re changed now. Not because she left us, but because she touched us.
Pat DeFrance passed away at her home in Jackson Aug. 6, 2013, after a long illness. She was 61.
Pat was born in a small town in Nebraska July 23, 1952, to Dale and Grace Andersen. She grew up in Broken Bow, and graduated from college in Kearney. She met Jerry DeFrance, and they married Aug. 26, 1978. They made their home near Jefferson, S.D., and both commuted to work in Sioux City, Iowa.

Isabel Edmisten, 94

August 16, 2013

Isabel Grace Edmisten, 94, of Lincoln, passed away Aug. 10, 2013. She was born in Ansley, to Charles A. and Alice (Butler) Chandler. She was a former school teacher and buyer for Miller and Paine.
Isabel is survived by a daughter, Ruth (Robert) Trobee of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Randall T. Trobee and Michael S. Trobee; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Ralph, and brother, Lloyd.

PAGE FUNERAL POSTPONED

The family of Charlene Page has asked us to notify the public that her funeral service planned for Saturday, Aug. 17, has been postponed. A date for the service has not yet been rescheduled. They family also wishes to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support, and for respecting the privacy of the family at this very difficult time.

ALCC found in violation of labor laws

BROKEN BOW, Neb. (AP) — Federal regulators say a central Nebraska feedlot underpaid dozens of employees and violated a program that hires workers from outside the United States.

The Labor Department announced Wednesday that Adams Land & Cattle Co. will pay more than $127,000 in back wages to nearly 70 employees. It will also pay more than $100,000 in penalties for violations under the H-2A program.

The voluntary H-2A program allows employers to hire and bring foreign workers to the U.S. for temporary or seasonal work when there is a shortage of domestic employees.

The dream becomes reality

A large crowd which included students, parents, grandparents, teachers, school administrators and contractors gathered for the official ribbon cutting and open house of the new North Park Elementary School in Broken Bow Monday afternoon. The administration and school board have worked very hard to keep the children in the forefront of the bond election and construction process, and in keeping with that student representatives were selected for the ribbon cutting ceremony. A delegate from each of the five grades that will be attending North Park was drawn randomly from the class list of names.

Heavy rains flood Bow streets

A severe thunderstorm rolled through Custer County Friday night bringing hail, strong winds and heavy hail - and took many area residents by surprise. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Custer County, but by the time the warning was issued water was already rushing down many of the city's streets. This picture was taken at the intersection of South 5th and South C Streets about 8:50 p.m. Friday. Several cars became stalled trying to make their way through the deep water.

Ronald E. Cole, 67

August 8, 2013

Ronald E. Cole, 67, died peacefully from the onset of Alzheimer’s Thursday, Aug. 1, in his home in Broken Bow. Private services will be held at a later date.
Ron was born July 4, 1946, at Broken Bow, to Elmer and Geneva (Trotter) Cole. He grew up on a farm south of Berwyn.
He attended Berwyn Elementary school from kindergarten through eighth grade. He graduated in 1964 from Ansley High School where he was a valued member of the football and track teams. Ron was a proud Warrior which was evident when he shared stories about his high school adventures.

Helen Jane Pflaster, 80

August 8, 2013

Helen Jane Pflaster age 80 of North Platte, died July 31, 2013, at the Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte. Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Alz-heimers Association or the Donor’s choice.

Vernon Rohde, 88

Vernon V. Rohde, 88, of Ozark, Mo., and formerly of Miller, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo. Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at the Miller Community Building in Miller, with Pastor Marty Robbins officiating. Interment was at the Armada Cemetery in Miller, with military rites provided by the Miller American Legion Post 351 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team. Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney were in charge of arrangements.

Jean Hergenrader-Woodward, 72

August 8, 2013

Jean Hergenrader-Woodward, age 72 of Callaway, formerly of Cozad, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney after a short battle with cancer.
Jean was born Oct. 5, 1940, at Cozad, to W.W. “Bud” and Mary Elta (Griffith) Beckley. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1958. Jean went on to attend beauty school in Grand Island.
