Just before dawn April 6, 2013, Melva Jean Warren left this earth for her heavenly home. She was born July 10, 1924, in her grandparentâ€™s home in Republic County Kansas to Marshall Allen and Sylva May Beecher, the oldest of three children.
She rode a horse seven miles to District 9 Republic County Country School through 6th grade, and later drove a horse and buggy. She started her high school years at Chester High School and graduated from Belleville High School in 1942.
Doris A. Roberts, 92, of Sargent, passed away April 11, 2013, at the Callaway Good Life Center in Callaway.
Funeral services were April 15, 2013, at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent, with Pastor Marty Robbins officiating. Burial took place in the New Helena Cemetery.
Doris Arlene Roberts was born Jan. 29, 1921, at Merna, to Wallace and Iona (Lange) Blakeman. Doris was the third child born to this union. She graduated from Merna High School in 1941.
Doris married E. A. (Jap) Roberts Oct. 17, 1941. To this union two sons were born; Wallace (Wally) and Leslie (Shorty) Roberts.
Every day, 3-year-old Morgan Kaelinâ€™s life consists of some form of therapy, lots of medications and feedings through a tube in her stomach. Oh - and watching her favorite show, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, on TV.
For the many things in her world that are so out of the ordinary for such a young child, things like getting excited when your favorite cartoon comes on make Morgan seem so . . . ordinary. But her life is anything but ordinary.
Classroom size - How many students are too many for the most optimal learning environment? That was a key issue of discussion at last weekâ€™s special meeting of the Broken Bow Board of Education.
The discussion ensued when a number of parents of next yearâ€™s 5th graders addressed the board about adding another 5th grade teacher to the elementary staff. The current 4th grade class has 72 students, meaning that with the current three sections of 5th grade there would be 24 students in each section.

Lawrence Niel Swartz, 74 of Oconto, died Sunday,April 14, 2013, at Callaway District Hospital. Memorial services will be Friday, April 19, 2013, at 4 p.m. at the Oconto Community Center in Oconto. A potluck will follow the service at 6 p.m. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter, Margaret; son, Lawrence Thomas; numberous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his brothers and sisters. He is also survived by his three special boys across the street.
Though it was firmly believed he was long gone from the area, folks in the area still felt a bit uneasy at the thought of a fugitive on the loose in their neighborhood. People across a number of states can now breathe a collective sigh of relief with the announcement that Lloyd Emer Tabor III has been captured.
LINCOLN - Nebraska lawmakers continued consideration of bills on a wide range of subjects this week. Â Hereâ€™s a roundup of some of them:
LB44: This bill advanced on a 30-2 vote Thursday. Sponsored by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha, the bill would set a 40-year minimum prison sentence for juveniles committing a 1A felony, which includes serious crimes such as murder, rape or kidnapping. Juveniles committing these crimes could still be able to be sentenced to life without parole.
ARCADIA -- The building needed to come down and the department wanted the training ... With that in mind, on April 7 the community of Arcadia had a house fire, and all for a good cause. With the house on Main Street gone, Arcadia can now make way for a new fire hall.

Two weeks ago, the announcement was made that The Casey Donahew Band would be headlining the entertainment at the 2013 Custer County Fair. This week another announcement was made of the act that will open the show and round out an evening of top-notch country music.
Kristen Kelly has recently burst onto the country music scene, and if you watched the Country Music Awards Sunday night you may have seen her as she was interviewed on the red carpet prior to the show. Kristen will open for The Casey Donahew Band in front of the grandstands at the Custer County Fair Tuesday night, July 30.
