Lucas J. Heusman, 30

Lucas John Heusman was born Nov. 29, 1982, in Lincoln to Timothy and Valarie Heusman.
Lucas grew up in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School with the class of 2001. Growing up in Custer County, Lucas participated in Cub Scouts and 4-H. While in high school, Lucas excelled in football, wrestling, and track, lettering multiple times throughout his high school career.
April 13, 2004, Lucas was married to Melissa Walker. To this union two children were born: a daughter, Suzanna, and a son, Jacob.

LeVern Cherry, 80

May 23, 2013

LeVern Edward Cherry, 80, of North Platte, passed away May 14, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
LeVern was born Oct. 24, 1932, at his parents’ home South of Mason City, to Frank (Pop) and Anna (Supanchick ) Cherry. To this union LeVern was born the fourth of six children; brother, Evert Cherry; sisters, Ethel McAlevy, Helen Young, DeLoris Smith, and Clarrena Overholser.

Clayton Chase, 85

Clayton Harold Chase was born March 13, 1928, in Omaha. He was 3-months- old when he was taken to the Nebraska Children’s Home. His biological mother wanted to keep him but as a single mom, knew he needed a good home with parents.
Harold and Kitty Chase of Elsmere, received word that a baby was available for adoption. In 1928, Kitty road on a truck with Miriam Clark to Omaha, to bring Clayton back to Elsmere and make his home with them. Clayton attended country school in Elsmere. He attended two years of high school at Purdum, then finished at Ainsworth High School.

Evelyn Barker, 81

Evelyn Ann Barker, age 81 of Arcadia, died Monday, May 20, 2013, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Evelyn Ann Barker was born April 5, 1932 at Jasper, Minn., to Lloyd and Elva (Boland) Engebretson.

Memorial Day activities planned across region

Ansley - The Ansley American Legion Auxiliary will be serving coffee and rolls at 9 a.m. at the Ansley Community Center. The Memorial Day Service will start at 10 a.m. at the Westerville Cemetery and at 11 a.m. at the Ansley Cemetery. A dinner sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary will follow at the Community Center.

‘Red Barn’ celebrates 5th

This Spring marks the 5th anniversary of the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway Interpretive Center in Broken Bow - better known as “The Red Barn” travel center.
Since its opening in April 2009, The Barn has had more than 16,000 visitors representing all 50 states and 32 foreign countries. The Barn has seen a steady increase in visitors each year - and last year saw a nearly 10 percent increase in traffic from the year before. In 2012, more than 4,000 people visited The Barn, and Chard Hirsch with the Custer County Tourism Council is excited to see what this year will bring.

Tennis courts to get a facelift

Way back on Sept. 10, 2012, the issue of refurbishing the outdoor tennis courts at Tomahawk Park in Broken Bow first came before the City Council. Eight months later, the issue was finally revisited - and this time it was resolved.
In that initial Council discussion, Park Superintendent Dan Anderson presented a recommendation on behalf of the city’s Park Board to refurbish two of the tennis courts and convert the third court from tennis to basketball. The bid that was quoted at that time was $23,700, which included replacing the lights as well.

BB School Board votes yes, add a teacher

Sixth grade parents convince board to overturn
earlier decision.

With a 4-2 vote Monday evening, the Broken Bow School Board authorized the hiring of an additional 6th grade teacher.
The ayes overturned a vote taken at a special board meeting in April.
The question then, is the same question addressed this week ... How many students are too many for the most optimal learning environment?

St. Paul tops Broken Bow 12-6 in senior game

St. Paul picked up the win at home, topping the Broken Bow seniors 12-6 Wednesday night.

Jake McCormick had three singles in the game to go with two RBI's. Hunter Campbell went 2-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Seth Quackenbush recorded an RBI single as part of a 2-4 performance.

McCormick had a good outing on the mound in his three innings of work, striking out one while allowing no runs and no walks. Preston Sanchez relieved McCormick after three innings and gave up three runs one hit, three walks and Broken Bow had three errors.

Broken Bow junior baseball drops third straight, loses to St. Paul 11-9

The Broken Bow juniors dropped their third straight game Wednesday night, dropping a close game to St. Paul 11-9.

Taylor Shea went 2-3 at the plate with two RBI's and scored a run in the loss. Josey Evans was another bright spot for the offense, going 2-2 with an RBI and reaching base three more times on three walks. Hunter Minnick had one RBI, going 1-1 and walking three times. Travis Kleeb had two hits in his five plate appearances.

The St. Paul pitching staff surrendered nine walks while striking out six.
