Funeral services today for Heusman

May 17, 2013

Lucas Heusman, age 30 of Sargent, formerly of Broken Bow, died Monday May 13, 2013, near Broken Bow, as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle/farm equipment accident.

Funeral services will be today, Friday May 17, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium in Broken Bow with Pastor Ken Hutson officiating. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of the arrangements.

Lucas John Heusman was born Nov. 29, 1982, in Lincoln to Timothy and Valarie Heusman.

Death penalty bill dies

LINCOLN -- Senators supporting a bill to repeal the death penalty and replace it with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole failed to muster enough votes to overcome a filibuster Tuesday.
A vote to cease debate on LB543, introduced by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, and bring it to a final vote failed with 28 in favor and and 20 opposed, five votes shy of the 33 needed.
The result means that the bill to repeal the death penalty in Nebraska is essentially dead.

Accident east of Bow results in fatality

Broken Bow emergency personnel were called to the scene of a motorcyle/tractor accident Monday night at 9:45 p.m. The accident occured on Highway 70, one mile east of Broken Bow.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Lucas Heusman, 30 of Broken Bow, was killed when the motorcycle he was driving rear ended farm equipment being pulled by a tractor driven by Jack Longfellow, 67, also of Broken Bow. Heusman's motorcycle was eastbound on Highway 70, when it rear ended the farm equipment. Heusman was wearing a helmet.

Budget debate goes into second day

LINCOLN --  Nebraska senators voted 36-0 yesterday (Thursday) to advance the state’s main budget bill after a two-day debate over several amendments related to property tax relief, railroad inspectors and funding for the University of Nebraska.
The Legislature has spent more time debating the budget on the floor than in previous years.

An amendment introduced by Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala would have added an additional $15 million to the $230 million allocated over the next biennium for the Property Tax Credit Program.

While Nebraska’s 49 state senators debate a proposal that would abolish Nebraska’s death penalty and replace it with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, Nebraskans can express their opinions on Monday, May 13, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. CT during an NET News live chat (netNebraska.org/chat) scheduled to coincide with a portion of the Legislature’s floor debate on LB543.

Karen L. Shea, 31

Karen Luann Shea was called home to the Lord Sunday, May 5, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Karen was born Sept. 17, 1981, to Louis Baumann and Alice Lucas. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 2000. She graduated Suma Cum Laude from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Mary Lanning School of Radiologic Technology in Hastings, with a degree in Radiography. She also earned a degree in Diagnostic Sonography from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Clyde "Tyke" Arnold, 76

Clyde Calvin “Tyke” Arnold, age 76 of Broken Bow, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Bryan LGH in Lincoln.
Tyke was born Aug. 16, 1936, in Broken Bow to Clyde Arthur and Vava Aleida (Condron) Arnold. He grew up and attended school in Broken Bow, graduating in 1954, where he excelled at football, basketball, and track. In 1984, he was inducted into the Broken Bow Athletic Hall of Fame, an honor he really appreciated. Tyke attended college at University of Nebraska Lincoln, HastingsCollege and Kearney State College.

Litchfield school rallied for bucks

Thanks to a special program funded by U.S. Bank, Litchfield Public Schools has made a significant stride in acquiring the funding for a new playground at their school. And the elementary students let out squeals of delight when the pictures of the new playground were revealed.
During a presentation ceremony Monday afternoon, Litchfield school was presented with a check for $2,500 from U.S. Bank. The cash reward was the result of the school winning the bank’s “Rally 4 Reward$” contest.
The Rally 4 Reward$ program is funded by U.S. Bank and promoted by the Nebraska School

LB507: Sen. Kathy Campbell of Lincoln sponsored this bill to improve the quality of child care centers, which passed on a 27-0 vote Tuesday. It would require certain child care centers to participate in a quality rating and improvement system and change the eligibility for families to get assistance to use child care centers.
