Evelyn Margaret (Smith) Fowler was born Sept. 6, 1917, near Nesbit, which was about nine miles west of Stapleton. She left the loving care at Rose Lane Home in Loup City, and departed this life Jan. 15, 2013, at 7:40 p.m. At that same moment she was welcomed by her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ into her new and eternal home.
She was greeted by her husband, John Mervin; her father and mother, Harry "Bud", Smith, Beatrice "Birdie" Echo (Heldenbrand) Smith; sister, Vera June (Smith) Miller; little brother, Charles Oscar Smith and a host of family and friends.
Karen Louise Wilcox, nÃ©e Nielsen, 69, of Virginia Beach, Virg., passed away peacefully Jan. 17, 2013, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. The cause of death was complications from a stroke.
Karen was born Jan. 19, 1943, in Aurora, to Emma Louise Nielsen and Oscar Frick Nielsen. As a child, Karen loved playing piano and organ, cooking, and fishing, and was an active member of the 4-H Club and Rainbow for Girls.
LINCOLN â€“ A lively discussion over gun and ammunition control legislation took place during a Judiciary Committee hearing of the Nebraska Legislature on Jan 23.â€¨Â Among the bills discussed was LB50, introduced by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha. LB 403: If passed, this bill introduced by Sen. Les Seiler of Hastings would prohibit the sale of novelty lighters in Nebraska. Novelty lighters are defined as nondisposable lighters made to resemble a cartoon character, gun, toy, etc., has flashing lights, plays music or has multiple buttons. Â â€¨â€¨
LINCOLN â€“ State income taxes â€“ both individual and corporate â€“ would be eliminated under a new tax plan outlined by Gov. Dave Heineman on Jan. 18. To make up for lost income tax revenue, the plan would end sales tax exemptions on products from agricultural machinery and chemicals to medicine and medical equipment.
