David J. 'Dave' Smith, 63

April 24, 2014

After a courageous battle with cancer, David Jerome Smith “Dave” passed away peacefully at his home while surrounded by his two children and loving companion, Lori. Dave was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; brother, Dan; and parents, Dorothy Smith and John Smith.
Dave is survived by his children, Zachary David and Blair Catherine; grandchildren, David and Scott; and siblings, Cathy, Mike, Pat, Mark, Scott, Tom, Tim and Teri.

Ilene Hulinsky, 77

April 24, 2014

Ilene Hulinsky, age 77 of Broken Bow, died Friday April 18, 2014, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Memorial services were Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Pastor Alan Petersen officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Ilene L. Hulinsky was born Nov. 19, 1936, at Burwell, to Clarence and Daisy (Palmer) Gumb. She was married to Frank Hulinsky Nov. 23, 1954, at Burwell. The couple lived at Fort Hartsuff, near Burwell. They later moved to Gothenburg.

Roger Hanson, 89

Roger H. Hanson, 89, of Kearney passed away peacefully Friday, April 18, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society – St. John’s in Kearney.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Kearney with Father Jerry Ness officiating. Burial with military rites was provided by Kearney American Legion Post 52, Kearney V.F.W. Post 759 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team at the Kearney Cemetery.
Roger was born Jan. 27, 1925, in Bertrand to Easton and Irene (Adkins) Hanson.

Roger Waller, 90

April 24, 2014

Roger Waller of Falls Church, Va., passed away peacefully April 17, 2014. He was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Holdrege, to Milford and Minnie Waller.
Roger was part of the “Greatest Generation”, growing up in the Great Depression. He was raised on a farm in central Nebraska. He was a World War II veteran; having been in both the Battle of the Bulge and Ramagen Bridge, receiving the Bronze Star. He was educated under the GI bill receiving a bachelors of science degree in Accounting from the University of Denver in 1949.

Patsy Barrett, 77

April 24, 2014

Patsy Barrett, age 77 of Central City, formerly of Merna, died Friday, April 18, 2014, at the Central City Care Center in Central City.
Memorial services were Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Burial was in the Merna Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements.

Priscilla 'Pat' Ring, 78

Priscilla “Pat” Fortik Ring, 78 of Kearney, died Sunday, April 20, 2014, at her residence. A private service for immediate family will be held. The family requests no flowers. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. On-line condolences may be shared at osrfh.com. O'Brien

Board splits on vote for AC in gym

April 24, 2014

There was a great deal of discussion on a proposal to install air conditioning in the high school gymnasium during the meeting of the Broken Bow Board of Education Monday evening. The BBHS Booster Club has made a very generous offer to donate a minimum of $20,000 and maximum of $25,000 to the district toward the cost of installing an AC system in the gym. However, there is a contingency with that offer - the system must be installed and working by next fall.

Supreme Court rules on Esch appeal

February 12, 2013, a jury in Custer County District Court found Trent R. Esch guilty of felony criminal mischief, and use of a deadly weapon to commit felony criminal mischief. His attorney, David Jorgensen, immediately went to work building his case for an appeal.
In mid November, 2013, the Nebraska Supreme Court handed down its decision, and last week a part of that original decision came back to the District Court.
The Supreme Court found the district court had erred in four areas:
(1) failing to sustain Appellant’s motion to dismiss or in the alternative motion for directed verdict
