Arthur Howard Grint, son of Harold A. and Helen (Finley) Grint, was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Sargent. He died Dec. 21, 2013, in Cerritos, Calif., at the age of 91 years 11 months.

City Council calls special meeting - possible litigation to be discussed

The Broken Bow City Council has called a special meeting for today (Monday) at 2:30 p.m. Only one item is listed on the agenda, with the council planning to go into closed session for the purpose of discussion of possible litigation on an employment contract.

The regular meeting of the Broken Bow City Council will be Tuesday, Jan. 14, at noon in City Hall. One of the items listed on that agenda is the renewal or non renewal of the City Administrator's contract. Other items on Tuesday's agenda include:

PSC reminds customers of cold weather rule

January 10, 2014

LINCOLN – In light of recent weather, the Nebraska Public Service Commission is reminding customers about its cold weather rule, which applies to the state’s three investor-owned natural gas utilities - SourceGas, Black Hills, and NorthWestern. From November 1 through March 31, these natural gas utilities must give customers an additional 30 days to pay their bills prior to disconnection for non-payment.

Nominations for American History Teacher of the Year

The Nebraska Department of Education is seeking nominations for the 2014 Nebraska American History Teacher of the Year.

The Nebraska State History Teacher of the Year will receive a check for $1,000, historical teaching materials and will be eligible for the National History Teacher of the Year Award, which includes a $10,000 award.

All nominations must be submitted by Feb. 1 on the Gilder Lehrman website at:

Have a Heart campaign announced

Leadership Custer County is asking everyone to ‘Have a Heart’ this winter and enter their ‘Food Bank Challenge.’

Leadership Custer County teams (originated by the Custer Economic Development Corporation) have been researching the needs in our respective communities and have found that the area Food Pantries need our help.

Team members Jami Anderson, Pete Cunning ham, Jim Morgan, Tim Loy and Todd Jonas talked about the reasons behind the push at this time.

Seventh, eighth graders invited to enter the 2014 `Why I Want to Go to College’ writing contest

The 12th annual “Why I Want to Go to College” writing contest for seventh and eighth graders was announced today by Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg. The contest, open to students in Nebraska and across the United States, is sponsored by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office and the Omaha Storm Chasers.

A total of $14,000 in College Savings Accounts will be awarded as prizes.

Tragedy in Burwell

BURWELL, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says it's leading the investigation into the deaths of a Burwell man and his daughter.
The patrol said Wednesday that the deaths of 31-year-old Christopher Melling and his daughter, Aimee, are being investigated as a murder-suicide. Aimee would have been 3 later this month.

The bodies were found Tuesday afternoon after officers were sent to the Burwell house to check on the residents. Neighbors had reported their concerns after seeing no activity at the home.

A firearm was found at the scene. Autopsies were ordered.
