Gold earned in Omaha - update

Ladies and gentlemen - we have gold. We are half way through the State High School Wrestling finals and central Nebraska has gold.

Grant Clausen of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller took on Zachary Zeleski of Overton and won in hard fought match 3-1 that went into overtime. It was an OT takedown that made the difference. Grant wrestles at 285.

This year the meet started with the 195 pound weight class.

Wyatt Lane, wrestling at D106 for Arcadia Loup City, also takes home gold. He defeated Jacob Calvert of Dundy County-Stratton in the championship match with a 6-5 decision.

It’s going to be an exciting day at the Centurylink Center in Omaha as the State High School Wrestling comes to a close – by early evening the champs will be crowned, but every contestant should go home a winner. Yesterday’s mat battles resulted in ultimate emotions, sheer joy for the winners and utter disappointment for the losers. All were hard fought.

James Peterson, 89

February 21, 2014

James “Jim” O. Peterson, 89, of Arnold, passed away Feb. 11, 2014, at the Callaway District Hospital. He was born July 18, 1924, to Emil and Esther (Trude) Peterson at Beatrice.
As a young boy he moved with his parents to Grand Island. At the age of 14, he received Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord and loved to share his faith. He graduated from Grand Island High School with the class of 1942.

Delores Poland, 82

Delores “Elaine” (Young) Poland, 82, of Lincoln, died Dec. 31, 2013. She was born June 21, 1931, in Custer County, to Glen and Blanche (Loyd) Young. Elaine was a retired clerk for several local businesses. She was a member of Capitol City Christian Church in Lincoln, and also was active in the Second Baptist Church. She volunteered at BryanLGH Medical Center, the Lied Center and Encounter Center at Morrill Hall.

Cody Johnson, 48

February 21, 2014

Cody Deets Johnson, age 48, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, of Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme. He was in the loving company of family members.
Cody was born Aug. 3, 1965, at Fremont, to Gilbert Ross and Dian Gammel Johnson. He graduated from Oakland-Craig and joined the Marine Corps. Cody was married previously to Judith A. Cantrell and Collette Largent. To these marriages, two children were born, and one adopted.

Louise E. Schmidt, 94

February 21, 2014

Louise E. Schmidt, age 94 of Merna, died Thursday Feb.13, 2014, at the Heritage Hall Care Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dawn Black officiating and rites by the Broken Bow D.O.E.S. Burial was in the Merna Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow D.O.E.S.

BBHS to compete at state cheer this weekend in G.I.

The 2014 Nebraska State Cheer and Dance Championships will be at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22.
Class D schools compete Friday, doors open at 5:00 p.m. with the first performance scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday is split into two sessions with classes A & B competing in the morning session (doors open at 7:00 a.m., first performance at 8:00 a.m.) and Classes C1 & C2 competing in the afternoon session (first performance at 3:20 p.m.)

Congressional Art Competition Submissions Due March 2

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) is encouraging high
school students in Nebraska's Third District to submit their artwork for
the 2014 Congressional Art Competition by March 2, 2014.

"The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity for Third
District students to share their talent," said Smith. "I hope we will be
able to build upon the success of previous years and continue to showcase
outstanding works of art in our congressional offices and in the U.S.
Capitol."

The Nebraska Art Teachers Association is working with Smith to coordinate
