Maxine L. Bednarski, 89

November 7, 2014

Maxine L. Bednarski (Weldin) of Broken Bow, was born in Lincoln,
Jan. 29, 1925. Two days later she was adopted by Earl and Irene Weldin, of Broken Bow, and was to be their only child.

Maxine, or “Mickie,” (what everyone called her), was raised in Broken Bow.

She was well respected for her beautiful coloratura soprano singing voice
and was a regular performer at local events. Her singing career took her to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she performed
live on the radio at the age of 17. Always the adventurer, she got her pilot’s license at the age of 19.

GOP expands majority in Nebraska legislature

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Republicans expanded their majority in the Nebraska Legislature in the election, setting the stage for more debates over taxes and spending when lawmakers convene in January.

The GOP saw a net gain of five seats in Tuesday's election. The new, one-house Legislature that convenes in January will have 35 Republicans, 13 Democrats and one independent.

The new Legislature is likely to be more conservative, with freshman members that include the founder of the Western Nebraska Taxpayers Association and a prominent member of Nebraska's tea party.

NEWS FLASH: absentee ballots change BBPS School Board results

November 6, 2014

The final count is in and come January, Pam Holcomb as a write-in will join Tom Osmond and Carl French as members of the Broken Bow School Board. There were three seats in contention, current member Matt Haumont chose not to run, and board members David Glendy and Tracy Popp were beat out at the ballot box. The official count is as follows: Tom Osmond - 1,159; Carl French - 834; Pam Holcomb - 825; Tracy Popp - 812; David Glendy - 776 and Melissa Garcia - 558.

Arlene L. Dew, 83

Arlene L. Dew, age 83, passed away Oct. 9, 2014, at Life Care Center in Cheyenne, Wyo.

A memorial service was at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Wyo., Oct. 11, 2014.

Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine, will be Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., with reception for family and friends immediately following at Cherry Hills Estates, 1100 East 10th Street, Valentine.

Norma Jeannine Ellingson, 85

November 6, 2014

Hastings resident Norma J. Ellingson, 85, passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

Services will be held Nov. 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Pastor George Kilmer officiating.

Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Norma was born Aug. 20, 1929, in Merna, to Floyd Achilles and Anna Opal (Small) Johnson.

She graduated from the Merna High School Class of 1947. Her extra curricular activities all centered on music and she loved to sing.

Vikki Janeall Dickinson, 63

November 6, 2014

Vikki Janeal Dickinson, former Broken Bow resident, passed away in Lincoln, Nov. 1, 2014, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born Jan. 8, 1951, in Omaha to Jess and NormaLee Hagadorn.

While attending high school in Broken Bow, Vikki was a cheerleader, was in the madrigal choir, and was assistant editor of the warrior yearbook. After graduation, she enjoyed participating in numerous activities including community theater.

Stanley R. Collins, 60

Stanley R. Collins, 60, of Broken Bow, passed away Oct. 30, 2014, at the hospital in Broken Bow.

Stan was born May 12, 1954, to Elmer and Arlene Collins in Broken Bow.

He attended the Broken Bow Schools and graduated in 1972.

He began his professional career at the Ache and Pain Barber Shop as a shoe shine boy.

He started working at the Mid-Nebraska Individual Services in Broken Bow then moved to Burwell for several years where he continued working for Mid-Nebraska. He worked various other jobs in the area then at Mead
Lumber and at Thomas Livestock for many years.

Carl Linn, 75

November 6, 2014

Carl Linn, 75, of Shelbyville, Kent., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 in Lincoln County, Kentucky.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Shelbyville, retired school teacher and coach having taught in Nebraska, Wyoming and New Mexico; member of the NEA; active in Civil Air Patrol. He has helped with Boy Scouts since he moved to Shelbyville. He enjoyed bowling and fishing.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Nellie Linn; daughter, Amy Linn; infant brother, Ervil; and brother, Jerry.

Winifred Johnson-Pandorf, 92

November 6, 2014

Winifred Ann Johnson-Pandorf, age 92, of Arnold, died at the Callaway Good Life Center Oct. 28, 2014.

Winnie was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Finchville, to Robert and Frances (Miles) Shaw. She grew up in Arnold, and received her high school education at Arnold High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Education degree from Kearney State College.

Winifred was a riveter during the war years.
