Round 1 and the quarter finals for Classes B & C in the books for the 2014 State High School Wrestling finals in Omaha. Classes A & D start around 4:30 this afternoon. Those who lost in the first round, or in the quarterfinals will have an opportunity to wrestle back tomorrow. Here are the results as they stand, organized by weight class. 106 - Championship Round 1 - Preston Jurgens (Beatrice) 33-5 won by fall over Clayton Glendy (Broken Bow) 24-13 (Fall 1:57)
Broken Bow Jr. & Sr. High School has the opportunity to bring in a speaker to educate our students on the importance of digital citizenship. Karen Haase from Harding & Shultz will will give her presentation to 6th-12th grade students, BBPS staff, and to parents on Wednesday, February 19th. Parents and guardians are invited to attend her presentation from 6-7:00PM in the Jr. High Auditorium on Wednesday evening.
Almost 24 hours after being handed the case for deliberation, the jury in the trial of Tyler C. Bain, 31, returned a verdict Friday afternoon of guilty on four of the five charges against him. The verdict was read at about 2:35 p.m. today (Friday) as follows:
Count 1, 1st degree sexual assault - Guilty
Count 2, 2nd degree assault - Guilty
Count 3, terroristic threats - Guilty
Count 4 - dismissed prior to trial
Count 5, use of a weapon to commit a felony - Not Guilty
Count 6, kidnapping - Guilty
Shirley A. Krause, age 85 of Ansley, died Feb. 13, 2014, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Ansley High School Gymnasium with the Rev. Mel Shepherd officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5 - 7 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Ansley Rescue Unit. Interment will be at the Ansley Cemetery.
Hastings resident Royce (Roy) Haines, 77, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Mary Lanning HealthCare in Hastings.
Memorial open house was Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at the Elks Lodge in Hastings. In honoring his wishes to be cremated there was no viewing or visitation. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Hastings, handled arrangements.

Jeanine Reneau Chitwood passed away Jan. 22, 2014, of ovarian cancer. She was born Dec. 13, 1933, close to the Middle Loup River near Gates, the youngest and only daughter of Meredith T. Reneau and Caroline M. Reneau. Her early childhood was spent near Arnold, where her parents and three brothers lived. They later moved to the Bethel Union Community north of Broken Bow where she graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1952. She loved collecting dolls, puzzles, and Christmas.
Gordon F. Hoskins, 72, of Broken Bow, formerly of Arnold, died Saturday, Febr. 8, 2014, at the Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
In the fall of 1941, on the 5th day of November, Gordon Francis Hoskins was born with the aid of a midwife in the house where he would live almost his whole life. Gordon's middle name was the same as his grandfather Francis Alfonso Hoskins.
Gordon's grade school days were spent in the one room schoolhouse of Loyal.
Marguerite Bristol, age 91 of Ansley, died Feb. 5, 2014, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Marguerite was born at home Oct. 28, 1922, in the Happy Hollow Community, to Arthur and Alta (Swancutt) Staab. She attended country school at Happy Hollow thru the 8th grade and graduated from Ansley High School in 1941.
She attended Kearney State College, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in education. She later received her masters degree in education.
The jury trial for Tyler C. Bain, 31, finally began this week, with jury selection starting Monday morning. It was standing room only as around 70 potential jurors crowded into the Custer County District courtroom. By 12:30 p.m., the jury of nine women and three men, with both a male and female alternate, had been selected. When court reconvened after lunch, each attorney gave their opening statement to the jury.
The Custer County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the Supervisors room in the Courthouse.
