Nebraska Capitol Focus: Immigration could surface in Nebraska gov. race

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers will have a new debate next year over immigration, an issue that could influence the 2014 governor's race in a state with a small but fast-growing Hispanic population.

Republican Pete Ricketts and Democrat Chuck Hassebrook remain sharply divided over whether Nebraska should continue to deny driver's licenses for young immigrants who qualify for the Obama administration's deferred-action policy.

BBFD called to grass fire near Broken Bow Township Cemetery

Volunteer Firefighters from Broken Bow (with Merna paged as Mutual Aid) were called into action shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday with a grass fire adjacent to the Broken Bow Township Cemetery. The dry grass and late summer winds added to the worry. Watch this week's Custer County Chief for more on Saturday's call to action.

Beware: NPPD warns customers about phone scams

There have been an increased number of phone scam incidents reported
this week to the Nebraska Public Power District by NPPD customers, and it could happen to you.

Incidents in Kearney and O'Neill have prompted NPPD to advise all customers, statewide, to be wary of suspicious calls.

Nebraska is picked 2nd in Big Ten volleyball poll

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Big Ten volleyball coaches pick Nebraska to finish second in the conference behind two-time defending champion Penn State.

Wisconsin is third in the poll released Thursday, followed by Illinois, Purdue, Michigan State and Minnesota. Michigan is picked eighth, followed by Ohio State, Northwestern, Iowa, Indiana, Maryland and Rutgers.

Nebraska senior Mary Pollmiller and sophomore Kadie Rolfzen are on the 15-member preseason All-Big Ten team, with Rolfzen a unanimous selection.

Nebraska officials to survey hunters on land use

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials are turning to hunters this year to ask their ideas about public land use in the state.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Nebraska will begin the three-year survey on Sept. 1.

Hunters at wildlife management areas or private lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters program may be approached by UNL researchers or Game and Park staff, who will ask a series of questions about their hunting experiences.

Minimum wage initiative qualifies for ballot

LINCOLN – A petition initiative to increase the minimum wage in Nebraska has met the qualifications to be voted on during the general election. Secretary of State John Gale says enough verified signatures have been submitted to add the issue to the ballot in November.

At least 80,386 signatures were required to add the petition initiative to the ballot. At least five percent of those who signed had to come from 38 of the state’s 93 counties. “In this case, 89,817 signatures were verified which was more than enough to meet the threshold,” explained Gale.

Boy who won ESPY for TD run has cancer recurrence

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The 8-year-old who received national attention for his touchdown run in the 2013 Nebraska spring football game has had a recurrence of brain cancer.

Jack Hoffman, from Atkinson, had been in remission since October. His father, Andy, said doctors found a "spot of concern" in Jack's brain in April, and follow-up tests in Boston on Wednesday showed the tumor had grown.

Andy Hoffman wrote on Jack's CaringBridge page that the tumor would be treated with chemotherapy.
