Weinman takes gold in pole vault

Congratulations to Brady Weinman South Loup. He won gold this afternoon in the pole vault. He successfully vaulted 14 feet 4 inches.

Funeral services today for Heusman

Lucas Heusman, age 30 of Sargent, formerly of Broken Bow, died Monday May 13, 2013, near Broken Bow, as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle/farm equipment accident.

Funeral services will be today, Friday May 17, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium in Broken Bow with Pastor Ken Hutson officiating. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of the arrangements.

Lucas John Heusman was born Nov. 29, 1982, in Lincoln to Timothy and Valarie Heusman.

Death penalty bill dies

LINCOLN -- Senators supporting a bill to repeal the death penalty and replace it with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole failed to muster enough votes to overcome a filibuster Tuesday.
A vote to cease debate on LB543, introduced by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, and bring it to a final vote failed with 28 in favor and and 20 opposed, five votes shy of the 33 needed.
The result means that the bill to repeal the death penalty in Nebraska is essentially dead.

Accident east of Bow results in fatality

Broken Bow emergency personnel were called to the scene of a motorcyle/tractor accident Monday night at 9:45 p.m. The accident occured on Highway 70, one mile east of Broken Bow.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Lucas Heusman, 30 of Broken Bow, was killed when the motorcycle he was driving rear ended farm equipment being pulled by a tractor driven by Jack Longfellow, 67, also of Broken Bow. Heusman's motorcycle was eastbound on Highway 70, when it rear ended the farm equipment. Heusman was wearing a helmet.

Budget debate goes into second day

LINCOLN --  Nebraska senators voted 36-0 yesterday (Thursday) to advance the state’s main budget bill after a two-day debate over several amendments related to property tax relief, railroad inspectors and funding for the University of Nebraska.
The Legislature has spent more time debating the budget on the floor than in previous years.

An amendment introduced by Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala would have added an additional $15 million to the $230 million allocated over the next biennium for the Property Tax Credit Program.

While Nebraska’s 49 state senators debate a proposal that would abolish Nebraska’s death penalty and replace it with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, Nebraskans can express their opinions on Monday, May 13, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. CT during an NET News live chat ( scheduled to coincide with a portion of the Legislature’s floor debate on LB543.

Jada Lynn Jenkins

Jared and Erica Jenkins of Minden proudly introduce their daughter, Jada Lynn Jenkins, born April 5, 2013, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Jada weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. She is welcomed home by siblings Megan and Sydney Jenkins. Also welcoming Jada are her grandparents John and Terri Oliver of Minden, and Randy and Vicki Jenkins of Broken Bow. Proud great-grandparents are Irvin and Marilyn Hyatt of Broken Bow.

The Broken Bow Homecoming parade will start at 1:45 at the school and proceed south on 9th street....
