Is everyone really living longer?

January 2, 2013

By Trudy Lieberman,
Rural Health News Service

People are living longer. Or are they? That's an important question as policymakers debate whether to raise the eligibility age from 65 to 67 for receiving Medicare benefits. Those supporting the change argue that the age for receiving full Social Security benefits is already 67 for those born after 1959, so why not do the same for Medicare? People are living longer anyway, and besides, the shift would save Medicare billions of dollars.

Bow grad shares Sandhills stories in first novel

December 28, 2012

Here in the newspaper business we have a saying - “everybody has a story.” Broken Bow native Betty Akin has lots of stories, and is ready to tell them.
Becoming an author was not something Betty had ever really thought about. After graduating from Broken Bow High School, Betty went off to Queen Anne’s School of Cosmetology in Kearney with some of her classmates, pursuing the dream of being a hairdresser.
After graduating from cosmetology school, Betty married a rancher and moved to the Brewster area. Word of the new “professional” in the area traveled fast.
