Delmer Applegarth, Sr., 83

March 22, 2012

Delmer Applegarth Sr., age 83 of Broken Bow, died Friday March 16, 2012, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were March 20, 2012 in Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. A memorial has been established to the family.
Delmer was born Oct. 2, 1928, at Keene, to Clyde Henry and Amelia Goldie (Peterson) Applegarth. At a young age he moved with his family to Weissert.

Bill Hickenbottom, 77

Bill Hickenbottom, age 77 of Dallas, Ga., passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012. The son of the late Velda Philip Hickenbottom and the late, Reva Leota Hickenbot-tom, he was born Oct. 16, 1934, in Broken Bow.
Mr. Hickenbottom was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post 111. He was retired from Atlanta Provision Company as a shipping clerk.
Mr. Hickenbottom enjoyed woodworking, gardening. telling stories and he loved his dogs.

Joseph Nagy, 95

March 22, 2012

Joseph Nagy, age 95 of Stuart, died Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Parkside Manor in Stuart.
Joseph Lewis Nagy was born in Cresent, Ohio Nov. 16, 1916. His father owned a store that served the mining community. At age 12 he moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from John Marshall High school in a class of 432 with an honor key. He attended Ohio State University for two years then worked in the civil service department in Washington D.C. until 1941, when he entered the US Army.

W.K. "Bud" Rynearson, 90

March 22, 2012

W. K. "Bud" Rynearson was born May 27, 1921, to William M. and Elberta (McGehee) Rynearson at Madison. He passed away March 14, 2012, at the Ainsworth Care Center in Ainsworth, at the age of 90 years, 9 months, and 16 days.
Bud was baptized into the Methodist faith at Madison, in 1933. He received his elementary and high school education in the public schools of Madison.

Wilma Mattox, 89

Wilma Lee Mattox, 89, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, in Cedar Rapids, lowa. Graveside services were Feb. 27 at Douglas Grove cemetery near Comstock, with Pastor Todd Karges officiating.
Wilma, the daughter of Hugh C. and Lily Virginia (Snyder) Drake, was born Nov.18, 1922, at Mount Washington, Kent. At an early age, she moved with her family to central Nebraska. Wilma grew up on the family farm south of Comstock where she attended Spring Creek School. She graduated from Comstock High School with the class of 1941.

Louis Nelson, 78

Louis M. Nelson, age 78, of North Platte, passed away March 19, 2012, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.
He was beloved by his immediate family and his extended family, and by his large circle of friends. Louis was born May 26, 1933, in Berwyn, to Ernest and Lillian Nelson.

CEDC hires new economic developer

The Custer County Economic Development Corporation has a new leader. Melissa Garcia has been hired as its new economic developer and will take the title of president.

Melissa has spent the last five years working for Mid Plains Community College as a community liaison for their Center for Enterprise Business and Community Development.

She was born in Broken Bow where she started elementary school. She moved out of the community with her family when her father joined the service, and later returned to Custer County and graduated from Callaway High School.

Board faces preschool, elementary issues

A motion to hire one full-time elementary teacher in the Broken Bow school district for the 2012-2013 school year passed by a 4-2 vote Monday night.
The request was made by elementary principal Kim Jonas, after she presented the board with the current and projected enrollment figures for the next few years. With lower elementary class sizes currently at right around 70 students, Jonas is concerned about only having three sections of 4th grade available for those larger classes.

Shots fired, investigation continues

At approximately 9 p.m. Sunday night in Broken Bow, an unknown person shot at an unoccupied Custer County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle. There were no injuries, and no arrests have been made at this time in connection with the incident.

The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting the investigation.
